There was a little boy who stood by the side of the fields, watching the other children play. They would never ask him to join them, as much as he wished they would.

"Why would we play with you?" one of the children sneered, his eyes casting a look of contempt at the boy. "You're so strange! You're poor! and you don't have a family! You're a freak! A monster!" he shouted and laughed as the rest of the children joined the taunting laughter and ran off before he could relpy.

The boy could have turned to the darkness, to hide himself from the taunting and evil looks from the other people of his town. But he didn't. He vowed to become someone they would look up to- to be a hero. He followed the light, and strayed from the common path and into his own. And yet, the people who he vowed to protect, to be the hero of, still shunned him. But he never strayed from the light.

Slowly, but surely, he gained his strength as he grew and came closer to that light he hoped to reach. The light that was his goal. One by one, people began to see who he truely was. Behind all the whispers and rumors, they saw his light instead of what they saw as darkness. They found strength within him and with him they overcame their sorrows- as only a thing he could help accomplish. Day by day, he grew up to be a man.

One day, an invading army had attacked their home, ordinary men and brave warriors stood up to defend their families and loved ones. But among the crowd of the defending force, stood one lone figure. The boy who had been the outcast faced the enemy and stepped out ahead of the rest of them, leading the defence.

"What, is he stupid?" they asked themselves. "Hey, kid! You're gonna get killed. Stay back! We don't need your help anyway."

Yet he kept moving foreward. Step by step, closer to the danger ahead, passion reflecting in his eyes.

And he alone, fought the entire army; one by one they fell. And in the end the only one left standing was him.

He turned back to the people who had doubted him and shunned him, the people who he grew up with and loved even if the feeling wasn't returned. He turned back and smiled, mumbled "Don't worry, you're safe" and collapsed in the middle of the battlefield.

Then the people came rushing toward him.

They carried him, cured him of his injuries, and they cared for him,

And for once they smiled at him.

And for ever after he was their hero, and they followed him and his beliefs.

And on his tombstone they carved "The closer you are to the light, the longer your shadow."

angelkicat- It was supposed to be my attempt at a parable. Well, it makes a good Naruto story.

I really believe that Naruto will grow up someday, kick some ass, and be loved by all people.

I'm a die-hard optimist.
