He never drinks alone.

House settled himself into his favorite chair, his legs up on the ottoman, a full glass of bourbon and a bottle by his side. The lights were dim. Soft jazz music played on the stereo.

He took a sip of the drink, savoring the burn as it went down. Its warmth reaching to his stomach. He'd waited all day for his date with the bottle. Too many memories were assaulting his senses. The need to dull them was strong. Remembrances of days when his body was whole. Times when he could run, play Lacrosse or golf, or make love without pain.

Now he was a slave to his body, to his limitations. He lived with constant pain, both physically and emotionally. Some days it was all he could do to force himself out of bed. It would be so much easier to just empty the bottle of Vicodin and pull the covers over his head waiting for the peace he craved.

For tonight he would drown his sorrows in the bottle. Maybe by morning all the ghosts and demons haunting him would once again retreat to the place where they hid.

Doubtful, but maybe.

He never drinks alone.

NOBODY DRINKS ALONE

Matraca Berg And Jim Collins

You brought that bottle home in a paper sack

Drew the blinds and locked the doors

And there's nothing but empty there inside that glass

So you pour a little more.

And there's no one there to judge you

At least that's what you tell yourself.

But don't you know

Nobody drinks alone

Every demon, every ghost

From your past

And every memory you've held back

Follows you home

Nobody drinks alone
