AN: Italics are forthoughts, bold is for emphasis. I haven't written a NGE fic in a while. And if you have problems with the spelling Kaworu, well when I first came to the fandom (way back in 2001, wow, time flies) that is how I remember it being spelt. This fic was inspired after seeing the directer's cut for ep. 24 (a must see).

Disclaimer: No I don't own NGE, others do.

"Fifth Child?" Misato said, instantly regretting her harsh tone, her brusque manner, but now that it had been said, she would back down a fraction.

He smiled slowly at the firm Misato, he red eyes glinting in the pore exposing light. He nodded his head graciously, and Misato lost part of her facade.

"You have been given your duties Fifth Child," Misato mumbled, now awkward, after he hadn't answered.

"Yes, ma'am."

His voice could be deceptive, Misato thought, soft and delicate... Almost at least but such hardness and strength. He had seen something, done something that would make him act this way... The question is, what? Misatio shuddered, knowing that his hard/soft voice just added to her fear.

"You achieved very well on your synch score, Kaworu," Misato grinned as she used his name, trying to warm him to her, trying to make he smile. To act his age.

"Thank you." Another nod, just as demeaning from the receiving side as the previous one.

So stilted, Misato wondered.

He broke away from Misato, stepping back a pace and giving her a blankly, firm stare, "I'm having a bath Major, please excuse me, I do dislike the scent of LCL." He bowed politely, hands briefly touching school boy trousers, head low.

Turning. back straight, Misato thought she had seen the last of him... For the time. She didn't know why she had started speaking, but she had.

"Shinji doesn't like it either," Misato burst out, looking down as he stopped walking away.

"You care for him, don't you Misato?

Staring at the clean, hard floor, the red NERV logo reflected hazily in the polished floor, Misato nodded shortly, biting her lip lightly. "Yes, yes I do." Misato slowly raised her head.

Kaworu was gone.

The Fifth Child was so alien, so...

Shuddering, Misato turned around and walked away.
