What They Decided, What We Decided
¤
So they decided that two hundred years was long enough to wait. So they decided that having a central government again might help keep the Dead at bay. So they decided he was finally legitimate. So they decided to accept him as King.
Somewhere, deep inside him, it occurred to him to argue against this decree. He wouldn't make a good king -- his self-confidence was poor at best, his anger was unpredictable, and he still felt rather guilty (the lazy way Mogget would peel back an eyelid and just look at him didn't help either).
Then Touchstone decided that he just didn't care.
It didn't matter if he was king, guard, or palace fool. There were things that were more important than all of that. More important than the Old Kingdom, than Ancelstierre, than the Charter, than even Kerrigor.
Sabriel was one of these things.
He wouldn't tell her that because she didn't think her life was that important at all. But he was pretty sure she did know that some of the best moments of his life were when he was curled around her in their bed, listening to her strong heartbeat and the heartbeat of the other life inside of her.
