Harry had once overheard a muggle-born first-year talking about a book series she and her sister had read together before she had gotten her letter. A select group of teenagers had to save the world, and each were given the power to change shape into any animal they touched, but they had to overcome the animal's own personality and instincts before they could use them.
"Sounds like animagi, doesn't it?" she had laughed.
Only it wasn't.
A person's animagi form fit them exactly, so there was no fighting—the personalities were the same.
When Harry had first realized what his form was, he had been shocked, then, suddenly, everything settled into place and it was just right.
"It seems so obvious now," was all he would say.
Ron had laughed when he heard, telling Harry that since he was so short, it made since he became such a small creature. Harry had just glared up at his gangly friend, now over six feet tall.
"And, hey, mate, those flashy colors are sure to attract the ladies," he had joked, before doubling over in pain as Hermione's elbow found his ribs not two seconds later.
Hermione, of course, had set off to do research as soon as she had found out. She came back loaded with muggle books sent by owl from her parents.
"Hmm…well, they're known for their intelligence and fierceness; they're silent most of the time, and very solitary," she read off as she skimmed the passages.
Harry could have told her that, but thanked her for the information on hunting habits, the only truly new information she had given him.
Remus had given him a smile a hug, and a name.
"Mr. Moony welcomes Mr. Quills," he had whispered before turning and walking away. Harry thought he saw tears rimming Moony's eyes, but dismissed it as a figment of his imagination.
Harry banked sharply as he headed back towards Hogwarts, and enjoyed the feeling of the cooling breeze ruffling his feathers. He thought back to his friends' reactions and smiled inside, but even if they hadn't approved it wouldn't matter—he couldn't let go now that he knew.
He was a Merlin.
AN: Umm…yeah. Really bad one-shot, caused by reading too many Harry Potter fics, and wondering, like everyone else, just what Harry's Animagus form would be. I didn't want to write a whole story, so I had to cram several ideas into one short glimpse. I hope it's not too confusing. Oh, yeah, and if you were wondering, the series in the first paragraph was Animorphs. A merlin is a small falcon known for all the traits mentioned above, and for taking on prey even larger then itself.
