A/N One-shot, random thoughts about relationships from the show.
Disclaimer: I own nothing…. blah, blah, would I really be wasting my time on fan fic if I could really make a show about it? I don't think so.
Hindsight
Dr. Greg House was the type of person you could trust with your life. Of course, everyone screws up sometimes, don't hold it against him. Everything he had done in his entire life had made him who he is today, a doctor. He had put so much into his career, it defined him.
Which wasn't necessarily bad if you were good at what you do. House was. But when you reach a certain point, you know that your definition isn't what it should be. To have your whole life summed up in a stethoscope and a medical degree was not something House had strived for. He wanted more.
House knew what he had made of himself. It was admitting he knew that was the problem. Those closest to him knew the real House. Dr. Wilson, for example. Still, there were some things that nobody knew. And he planned to keep it that way.
Like Cameron. House knew about her feelings for him. There weren't too many people who didn't. Most days, he didn't mind her crush on him. In fact, sometimes he found it amusing. You can find humor anywhere if you try hard enough. But some days, it pissed him off. Those were the days when he was reminded of Stacey.
He never understood what went wrong. He loved her. She loved him, or so he thought. They always say hindsight is 20/20. But ever since, his vision is blurred. The sarcastic, ever-joking, House told himself to see an ophthalmologist. But maybe this was something he would never see.
When he looked in the mirror, he wanted to see more than a miserable doctor with a cane. He wanted someone who could see past the critical sarcasm and snide remarks. Stacey did that. But Stacey was gone.
Cameron and House had more in common than they thought. Both had difficult pasts behind them and many secrets. The more time they spent together, the more secrets exposed themselves, never fully coming out. They showed their contents, then retreated as quickly as they had come out, leaving a hint about their meaning behind. The truth was like a gift, wrapped in layers upon layers of paper. At times, House doubted the existence of Cameron's gift. Cameron thought that House had switched boxes, just to piss her off.
They would die to find out what was hidden under so many lies and so much paper.
Maybe they never will.
A/N Thanks, jeevesandwooster, for reviewing. You're right, it's not really a happy ending, but it's not really a story either. Just some random thoughts. Glad you liked it.
