She heard the cries which rent the air, the terrified ones and the ones of sadistic pleasure

She heard the victim's screams of anguish, before they went silent, unconscious most likely

She heard the whispered 'enervate' before the screams started anew

She heard nauseating cracks and sickening thuds

She heard blood dripping onto the ground and forming a shallow, dark pool

She could almost hear the twisted smirks and wide eyes, the malicious sneers and the unending fear

Amongst all this, she could hear her husband's voice

Then she closed her ears and mind to it and heard no more.

A crimson drop landed on her shoulder. Blood

Another one now

And another

It was like standing in the rain, she mused. Except that the water was red.

She looked up and saw a patch of 'rain' on the ceiling

Her husband then entered the room, ignoring her as though she was invisible.

And in a way she was

His hands were dripping with the strange rain and his robes were streaked with it

He looked half crazed as he went into the bathroom, then emerged.

Clean.

He took her then and she succumbed

Maybe she wasn't invisible after all

"Do you love me?" the whispered, mocking voice came from the man lying beside her

Did she? In a way yes and yet how could she?

No, she was in love with the idea of him, not the man himself.

For how could one love one such as him?

He was cold and callous, the only emotions he possessed being malice and vengeance.

Once maybe, she had truly loved him. But not anymore

She told herself that one day she would leave. Rise and shake off the shackles which bound her.

Someday

But as always, she replied the same

"Yes"
