Not much to say about this one as I have no idea what inspired it. It is my first drabble-y fic, though. Tell me what you think, 'kay?
Disclaimer: Not mine, never will be mine, only mine in my dreams. That should cover it...
Never Alone
When she was content and when she was depressed, when adrenaline flowed through her veins and when she felt so weary she could fall asleep on her feet, he was there to keep her company and talk to her about anything and everything.
When she searched for him, calling out his name as though simply doing so would be enough to bring him back into her arms, he struggled against the evil hanyou's clutches and tried to return to her, not wishing to see her in any more pain.
When the shard in his back was removed at long last, he collapsed in a heap on the ground and, just before closing his eyes for the final time, slid them in their sockets towards her and muttered, "Ane-ue…"

When her life was at its highpoint, a smile ever-present on her face, he snatched that grin away along with the men closest to her and left her to grieve.
When she lay injured, bleeding, on a futon in Kaede's hut, he was there in her thoughts, the baboon pelt-draped figure smirking at her from beneath his guise, the image alone enough to send Goosebumps prickling down her skin.
When she saw her brother die, he was there in spirit, reaching out wan fingers toward a Saimyoushou to grasp the jewel fragment, the only sound to be heard a "Kukukuku…"

When living seems like too much to ask for and when the agony of loss becomes unbearable, she hugs her arms about herself, sighing, and thinks, why me… and why am I so lonely?...
And yet…

When she cried in the night, hot tears streaming down her cheeks, he was there to wipe them away, his fabric-encased hand cupping her face as he soothed away the pain.
When she shivered in the early morning, anticipating the dawn, he draped his sleeves about her form, giving her a heat that did the sun's to shame.
When she watched in horror as her younger brother fell, groaning, a poison insect flitting away with a shard of the Shikon jewel clutched between his legs, he was there to caress her shoulder, to say, "He's in a better place, now…"

When she returned from battle, boomerang expertly hoisted over her shoulder, she was there to help her unwind and un-tense with a bottle of bath salts and knowledge of a nearby hot spring.
When she crossed her arms, fuming, frustrated at a certain monk's wandering hands, she was there to smile knowingly but to nonetheless offer advice to help improve both her relationship and her mood.
When her beloved sibling breathed his last breath, she was there to whisper her name in hopes of comforting her, murmuring, "It'll all be okay…"
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
When she defended herself against a horde of youkai ready to devour her in an instant should she let her guard down, he took the offensive, screaming out a curse and an attack, swinging his gigantic sword as he destroyed the group of demons.
When she made a mistake or felt guilty, on the verge of tears yet again, he would bark out a harsh comment, not knowing of the severity of his words at the time, but, later, would try to make amends by saying something kinder.
When Kohaku died at long last, he stood twenty feet away, allowing her to mourn in silence, and gave her the space she needed, all the while mumbling, "That fucking bastard…"
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
When life begins to look better and when she feels so happy she could burst, she sits by the fire, the only one in her motley group of companions still awake, and wonders…
…am I really so alone?...
End fic. Please review.
