On with the story. Enjoy, please? (Lily's POV)
Chapter Two: A Friendship In The Makings
Back and forth, back and forth; the wind made my hair, which was in pig-tails, swing back and forth. The oak tree outside my home, had my favorite swing on it, which is where I was now. The book I had been reading fell to the ground and I didn't bother to pick it up. I held an object gingerly in my hands. I had been made Head Girl, and now with school starting tomorrow, I sat on my swing, collecting my thoughts.
Head Girl was a difficult job, as I was reminded by the old Head Girl Alice Prewett-Longbottom. In fact, that's how she met Frank Longbottom, who was Head Boy, and is now her husband. She had been a good friend of mine though she was a year ahead of me. And she'd be loads of help if I needed her; at least that's what she said when I owled her with the news.
Things with Petunia had gotten a little better, I'll admit. She was surprisingly better spirited towards me. I guess it's because she's getting a husband; which in her opinion I could never attain. I could get a husband... I sighed as a tear ran down my cheek. I guess this is what he wanted. To torment me in my sleep. To make me unable to rid him from my mind. To think about him continuously, ruining my summer. Well, it was working.
Sleep was coming easier now; that was true. I started to get the mental picture of the crushed James Potter, out of my mind. And for a while I did. Until Diagon Alley. It was normal again; if you can call anything magic-related, normal. My dad dropped me off in front of the Leaky Cauldron, where he would pick me up in four hours time. When I tapped the wall and walked in, I did my normal shopping. I was walking out of Flourish and Blotts when it happened.
~*~*~Flash Back~*~*~
"Well, well, if it isn't the Mudblood. Where's your friend? Ditch you when she found out you were a Mudblood, did she?"
I tried to ignore the iced-voice of Severus Snape, a Slytherin boy in my year. He, like them all, were pure-blood freaks. They tried to get to me, but I was strong willed and fast wit-ted.
"Maybe if you washed your hair, you could get a friend, Severus. You don't seem to have any, come to think of it."
Laughter was heard two feet away, as the voice of Sirius Black came into the conversation.
"You were told Snivellus!" Severus flicked Sirius off, and Sirius stopped laughing.
"Don't you have a devil to worship? Or a mate in prison you want to visit?"
Snape swore badly but walked away when Sirius took out his wand.
"You shouldn't have said that Black."
"Back on last-name terms, Evans? I saved your arse back--"
"Lay off her," I heard Potter say softly.
"Easy for you to say, you're in love with her."
I saw Potter's face go red, and I turned away.
"Yeah. What's your point?" Potter said icily.
"You won't believe this, Evans!" Sirius said ignoring Potter for once. "Dumbledore actually made Pron--James Head Boy!"
I turned around slowly, "You're joking!"
"Nope," Remus said softly. I felt my stomach drop. A whole year of being around Potter?! I can't believe it. What should I expect? Getting stared at? Hit on? Asked out? Kissed? This was too much to handle.
"Then he better grow up."
~*~*~End~*~*~
As I reflected back on that day, I frown. I purposely hurt him. Though I don't know why... and I... didn't know how to react. I never wanted to hurt him. He just... wasn't supposed to love me!
"Lily dear! Are you packed?" The voice of my mother broke my thoughts and I walked inside. Maybe Potter would get over me. Maybe. Maybe not...
* * *
"Owl us whenever you can sweetums," my mother said as I hugged her goodbye.
"Bring back some more frog spawn, would you?" my father grinned, while he kissed my forehead. I nodded, waved goodbye, heard my parents wish me good luck, and I walked onto the train.
"Lily! Lily!" Dorcas Meadowes came flying out of nowhere and landed next to me; she had excellent seeker skills. We exchanged the how was your summer's and hugged.
"Where's Amelia and Ed?"
Amelia and Edgar Bones, were the only twins in our year. They were both in Gryffindor, and were the best of friends. (A/N: If you reread the OOTP, they talk about Edgar Bones; Amelia Bones' brother)
"Oh," Dorcas looked taken aback. "I don't know. But congratulations on making Head Girl. You must be so excited!"
"Yeah! I really am," despite the Head Boy. I looked around for the twins. I'd always had a crush on Ed, but I was able to tone it down a bit last year. Both Amelia and Ed had light brown hair, but while Amelia had gray eyes, Ed had blue ones I could (and have many times), get lost in. I still, though the crush had died down, wanted a guy around for that encounter with James--I mean, Potter.
"You know, I think I have to go the Head's Compartment."
"Oh!"
"Yeah," I said smiling. "Tell Amelia and Ed I say---"
"Hey Lilykins!" Amelia came out of nowhere, with Ed by her side. He had called me Lilykins. When will he learn?
I pulled Amelia into a hug, "Hey 'Melia!" I turned towards Ed. "Edgar," I nodded holding out my hand. He took it and pulled me into a hug.
"I get it--I get it, no more Lilykins," he grinned at me, and I smiled back.
"Yes, you've got it," I was about to pull away when--
I heard someone push away from a crowd of people. The Marauders were amongst them. They were minus one person; Potter. Of course, he was Head Boy, and probably at the compartment. But I heard part of their conversation to prove otherwise.
"Shall I go after him?" Sirius had asked.
"No... he needs time alone after what he just saw," Remus instructed.
"It was just a hug--"
"James didn't seem to think so--"
"Bones doesn't like Evans, it's not like they're going out--"
"Yes, but you and I both saw how he rushed out of here after he saw them--"
Just great. A depressed Head Boy. As if this job wasn't hard enough: running the Prefects, controlling the school, working with Jam--Potter. Just what I needed. Another obstacle.
"I'll see you guys later," I said goodbye to my friends, who waved, and walked towards Potter's friends. The least I could do was be nice, call him by his given name, and pretend like I was looking forward to being in the same room with him for hours and hours. Pretend.
"Hey guys! Where's James?! I've been looking for him!" God, why did I have to smile?
They stared at me speechless for a moment.
"Guys? Well," I had to get away quickly. "If you see him, tell him I'll be waiting in the Head's Compartment for him." I smiled again before walking away.
The Head's Compartment was made for two Gryffindor's, having gold and red chairs, walls, tables; everything basically. I smiled and sat down on the chair, picking up my instructions. If this job was going to be difficult, at least I'd have style doing it. After reading it, my mind fell on James. I was going to have to make an effort to be nice. I was mean and he fell in love so maybe if I'm nice... he'll fall out of love...? This is a messed up world we live in.
"Hey Evans," I heard a dull voice say from behind me, breaking my thoughts. Okay, I sighed, be nice, Lily.
"Hello James. Have a good summer?"
"Shut up Evans, I don't want to--What?" he said sitting down across from me.
"I asked how your summer was James. I hope it was good." This better be worth it.
"Oh, it was okay," he eyed me strangely. "Sirius was over the whole time and we did some work to see what kind of jobs we were going into when we left school."
"I see," I handed him the parchment. "And what did you decide?"
"Oh, Sirius is definitely going to be an Auror. I still can't decide really."
"You're father is the Minister of Magic, correct?"
"The one and only," he smiled; but it faded quickly. "He's not home much, though. Always got a job to do, someone to talk to. He became the Minister when I was seven. I've never had that big of a conversation with him since. But he loves Quidditch, and sometimes he comes to my games. I love to give him the show of his life, when he does. It's like... I feel... if I can score enough goals, he might just come to visit... or something, you know? I try to score every goal, and I work really hard to please him. But it's like he doesn't care. And then... throughout my first four years, I tried to please him with grades. All I got was a pat on the back. So, I stopped trying."
I looked up at him unable to speak. I never thought the perfect-James-Potter had a father like that. He was the Minister of Magic, with a prat son. I didn't think James felt that way... I didn't know. He did all of that for his dad? Not the female population at Hogwarts? I never knew.
"I'm--I didn't know." How do you apologize to your enemy?
"Don't worry about it," he practically read my mind. "It's all right. Not many people do, actually. And if you don't mind I'd like to keep it like that."
"Of course, of course," I nodded. After a moment, he started reading the parchment. I looked at him. "Um... I'm sorry your dad's not there. Mine's a Muggle... he doesn't quite understand magic. But he's not scared of it. He... he should be. I'm having a hard time explaining about... what's going on. With... Voldemort and his followers."
He looked up at me. I don't know why I'm telling this. But it feels good.
"I can't imagine not knowing how to say that," he said thoughtfully. "I guess... maybe it's harder for you. Since you never want to scare your family with the knowledge. But you can't not tell them. They need to know about it."
"I know, I know," I repeated. "You're right. It's just too hard for me to... to tell them, they're in danger--I'm in danger. They wouldn't have let me come here. I love it here."
"If it--if it means this much, which I'm not saying it shouldn't.... I could always... send someone to talk to them. My father's assistant, his old Auror partner.. maybe him himself, if he wants to--" ]
"No... I mean... no thank you. I need to tell them.... or I have to be there at least."
"I understand completely," he put the parchment down and looked at me. "If... now before I go on... please just think about it before answering... I could always tell your family about it. I know what's going on.. and we can tell them this Christmas or something. I can help you. But--" he silenced me with a hand. "Just think about it. I'm not doing anything you don't want to do. I just want a fair chance to win your friendship before you decide if I can."
Friendship? Bullocks. But I nodded anyway.
"Okay, I'll think about it. And thanks." He nodded, opening the door for me, as we made our way to the Prefects Compartment.
