Chapter 6: Strike Two; James' Second Mistake
Even through all the anger and emotion James was feeling right now, I couldn't help but notice how scared he was, and how brave he was trying to be.
"What are you doing, Padfoot?"
Sirius stuttered out an incoherent answer, and I moved closer to James. I knew I could calm him down, so I had to try.
"James... it's not what it seems," I lied quickly.
"I know what's happening here, Lily. I know that Sirius is trying to get you to go out with me--"
"I don't understand why it's such a big deal--"
"I'm trying to get over you Lily! I'm trying so hard to... even though you asked me to only last night. I'm trying not to have those feelings for you! The feelings you can't return--"
I backed away from him, trying to be strong.
"Sirius was under the false impression that I fancied you. I was setting him straight and we were just about to leave."
James sat silent this time, and the three of us walked down to the Great Hall for breakfast.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It has been two weeks since the incident with James, Sirius and I. We're okay, I guess. James is a little more distant, I'm afraid to say. Not emotionally... but physically. I never realized how much his hugs meant to me before. We say good night with a wave; no longer the hug that he needed... the one I now needed.
I do admit, that he is trying to get over me. He's been on two dates since, and I've wished him the best on them. However, after the four hours he's gone, I get sort of bored, without him their. Not that I only use James for entertainment purposes. I just get kind of bored talking about schoolwork with Remus, pranks with Sirius, and telling Peter how he can get himself a girlfriend.
Tonight was another night James was going out with a cute Hufflepuff sixth year. Her name was Amy, and they both loved Quidditch. I'm not surprised... it's easy for them to find a topic to talk about, so James might go longer on his date. He came down from the boy's dormitory now.
"Hello, James," I greeted, and he gave me a faint smile. "Good luck on your date tonight. Think you'll get a girlfriend, then?" God, I hope not.
James shrugged then said, "Thanks. Tell the guys I'll see them later, will you?"
"Of course," I nodded. "Have fun."
"See you, then."
And thus began my boring evening. I had no idea where the guys were, so I pulled out a book and started reading. After a while, I started thinking about James. It's funny, isn't it, how you can relate the main character of a book, to someone you know. In this book, the main character is a tall bloke, who was very handsome, and intelligent, but was missing out on the world. He was engrossed in work, and everything remotely related, that he forgot to live. I related this man to James, though as much as they were alike, they were different.
"Hmm..." I was starting to regret not eating dinner that night. I heaved myself off the couch, and walked out the portrait hole and down to the kitchen. When I got there I saw Sirius walking from it.
"'Ello Lil! Where are you headed?"
"Kitchens," I replied lazily.
"No... you won't want to go in there." he said blocking my way.
"And why not?" I asked, trying to push past him.
"Um... house elves... gone mad."
"Move Sirius," I said pushing his reason aside. "I want to go and get some food."
"I'm dead," I heard him whisper as I walked past, and pulled the door open.
As I walked inside I felt my jaw drop open. That evil... that foul... he lied to me! How could he?
Sitting there at one of the main tables, drinking a butterbeer was no-one other than--
"James Potter!" I yelled and he dropped his drink.
"Damn," he swore, turning around. "Oh, hey Lil."
"Don't hey Lil me. What the bloody hell are you doing here?"
"Drinking a butterbeer... this is the kitchen," he said dryly.
"Why aren't you with Amy?" I asked. "You talk about her continuously, so you ought to be with her."
"There is no Amy."
"What?" I asked.
"I didn't stutter."
"But you talk about her all the time and you tell me you think she really fancies you--"
"It was a lie Lily," he said standing up and walking towards me. "It was all a lie."
"Why would you lie to me?"
"Because I can't get over you."
I looked at him, frowning, and moved back slightly, as if preparing myself to run away when and if he decided to make a move on me.
"I can't stop thinking about you... and how much I love you..."
"And you wanted to make me jealous?"
He looked thoughtful for a moment. I had to admit, as upset and betrayed as I felt, the question did seem to be a trick-question.
"Did I make you jealous?" he asked.
I threw my hands up into the air. "I can't believe you!"
"Lily--"
"No... no you didn't make me jealous," I answered, turning to look away. "You have no idea how bad I feel right now. I thought you were getting on with your life--"
"I'm trying!" he insisted.
"Well it's not working now is it?" I spat.
"Don't be like this," he wrapped his arms around my waist. Don't do it again James, please don't do it again.
I froze in his arms then whispered, "Don't..."
"Please... please..." he whispered, turning me around to face him. "As much as you want me to stop loving you... I want you to start loving me."
He pulled me into a hug, and I tried to push him away; though I didn't use any effort.
"Don't do it James..."
He paid no mind and leaned towards me. I looked away, but he pulled my chin towards me so we looked into each other's eyes. I closed mine anticipating the kiss I thought I didn't want to happen.
His lips touch mine, only for a moment, and I fully kissed back. Surprising myself, I didn't stop him. The kiss ended when he pulled away and pulled me into a hug.
"I love you," he whispered to me.
Feeling as confused as ever, I pulled away from James... the thing I could never pull away from, and I was back in the same spot I was in only a little while ago. I had to get away from James.
I ran down the corridor, and into the common room, not stopping for anyone or anything. I fell into my bed and closed the covers around me.
The scariest thing wasn't the fact that I kissed back. Nor was it the fact that I wasn't crying because of his betrayal. It was the fact that I was smiling, and blushing. I enjoyed it.
