Going Out With James

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------

I've started wondering if James considers this a date. Frankly, I don't know what to make of the situation. He should be here any moment to take me to meet his parents, and I couldn't be more nervous. Soon enough, I would meet the two people who conceived my-once-was-enemy, and that now was a good friend... that could possibly become more. I put on my favourite pair of bell-bottoms, and my silk flowered blouse; I decided that gauze was inappropriate. I hopped down the stairs as the doorbell ring. My mum answered the door.

"Hello James, dear."

"Hello, Mrs. Evans; always a pleasure to see you."

I stifled a laugh as I walked into the room. "Hi James!"

"Hey Lil," he said grinning, and he pulled me into a hug.

"You two freaks saw each other yesterday. Honestly... you're like bloody rabbits. You wait 'til she comes home pregnant Mum—"

"That's enough Petunia," said my mum. I scowled at Petunia then turned back to James.

"Shall we?"

"Um..." he looked at me and I raised my eye brows.

"Are you all right James?"

"Yeah... sure..." I took his hand and prompted him to Apparate to his home.

The Potter's household was brilliant. Every other room was filled with brilliant gold colours; the others had a reddish colour much like the Gryffindor common room. It was a house fit for kings. As we walked around the house he gave me looks around all the rooms; and one bathroom was bigger than my whole room! It was amazing. He saw me looking at his house incredulously, and shook my shoulder.

"Lily?" he asked. I looked up at him.

"It's brilliant—"

"Don't tell my parents that... they could go on forever and ever talking about the house and its contents."

"If you insist," I said smiling. He led me to the kitchen, and into the dining room. There were at least ten house-elves prepping the dining room, and twenty preparing dinner.

"Wow..."

"They're just elves," said James, as if it were nothing. And I couldn't help but smiling, feeling that if this were any other day or time in any previous year, he would have been trying to impress me with all the belongings, and riches he owns.

"Mum, Lily's here."

I looked up to find a lady sitting in the dinning, awaiting his arrival. James' mother had a dark (unmessy) head of black hair; her eyes were light blue. He gave her a kiss on the cheek and I shook her hand.

"Very please to meet you, Mrs. Potter."

"Oh, James, she's incredibly beautiful," cooed Mrs. Potter. I know I was blushing, and James cleared his throat nervously.

"Yes. Where's Dad?" he asked, moving to sit down.

"Out side with—"

"Sirius!" James yelled as Sirius flew through the open window and landed on top of James.

"Jamesie—Lily-kins!" he said excitedly, pulling me into a hug. "Great to see you."

"Great to see you, too!" I said as he released me, and I caught James and his mother share a glance to my right.

"Love?" called a man from the kitchen.

"In here, dear," said Mrs. Potter in return.

"Sirius you're mad," laughed the man who walked into the room. "Oh... and who is this?"

"Lily-kins!" Sirius said, cutting of James' remark.

"Wow," he said, extending his hand and smiling. "Great to meet you."

"Pleasure, Mr. Potter," I said smiling.

He sat down next to his wife and looked over at James.

"She's a very beautiful little thing, isn't she? Just as you described James."

"James talked about me?" I asked.

"Only a couple times—"

"A second—"

"Whenever he's home," Mrs. Potter added, smiling. She turned to a house elf that had brought us beverages. "Thank you." The house elf bowed before walking over to James and giving him three glasses; one for Sirius, him and myself.

James and I shared a momentary blush, but I recovered quickly, and shot James a grin.

"Lovely house you have here, I've got to say."

James shot a look at me, to which I shrugged and he gave me a look that says, 'Oh-you're-in-for-it-now!' I stuck out my tongue behind Sirius so the Potter's couldn't see.

"Thank you," beamed Mrs. Potter. "James told us your house was lovely, too."

"Nowhere near yours of course. I love the colours; Gryffindor, no doubt?"

"Oh yes... relatives are always coming over to see the house Godric built."

I choked on the drink. "Godric Gryffindor?"

"The one and only," said Mr. Potter. "We are related to him, after all."

"You never told me about that, James," I said and everyone turned to look at James, who moved uncomfortably in his chair.

"It's usually not something I flaunt," he said quietly, and I gave him a small smile.

"I think very highly of your family, from what James has told me."

Mr. Potter waved his hand. "It's all rubbish, whatever he said."

James sunk lower into his chair.

"It was really nice of you to let Sirius stay here," I tried again. Mr. Potter took another sip of his glass, and then nodded.

"Very good boy, isn't he? Much of a charmer at school, I hear."

I sat there momentarily shocked. He wasn't thinking of Sirius as more of a son than James, was he? I stood up quietly, and walked cleared my throat.

"Please excuse me while I use to wash. Would you show me where it is?" I asked quietly.

James nodded and stood up, leading me out of the room. When we got upstairs to the bathroom he turned around and let me walk past him. I stopped and turn James towards me.

"I'm sorry James, I ruined everything," I said quietly. "Gosh... I've been ruining a lot of things lately haven't I?"

He looked at me. "You can't help my dad from being who he is."

I shook my head. "I..."

"Do you need to use the wash?"

"No."

"Didn't think so."

"I want to talk to you."

"I want to leave."

"Let's go then."

"What?" asked James who walked towards the end of the hall way.

"Tell your parents I have to meet my parents for brunch and they wanted you to come. We can go out to eat... or something and you can get away."

He stared at me for a moment, and finally gave into my proposition.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------

"Are you sure you can't stay longer, Lily?" asked Mrs. Potter.

"Oh, no, no. I really must be leaving. My parents planned a brunch with James, and it starts soon, so we really must be leaving."

"James, make sure to bring her back here okay?" Mrs. Potter said, and then pulled James outside. "Are you all right?" I heard her ask.

"Fine. Why?"

"I see the way you look at her James."

"Excuse me?"

"Oh... the times I'd seen your father look at me like that. Thought it was the cutest thing ever. You have fun with Lily."

I saw James wave his hand impatiently, and walk back over to Sirius and me.

"See you later mate," he said nodded towards Sirius.

"You two love birds have fun."

I chose to ignore this comment, and I think James was quite happy that I did so. James took my hand leading me towards the door, and not waiting for his father's goodbye. We Apparated to Hogsmeade.

He took me to The Three Broomsticks, and bought us soon food. He was suspiciously quiet, and answered all the questions I'd ask in monosyllables. The day went on, and the sun started to set. After we had walked out of Zonko's Joke Shop, James took me down to the Shrieking Shack, and sat down on the bench with me.

"James?"

"Yeah?"

"Are you okay?"

He shook his head yes, before standing up and walking towards the fence. I stood up and stood next to him, holding my coat tighter around me.

"I messed up, didn't I?" I asked again.

"It's not you," he insisted, turning to look at me.

"It was my fault we met each other's parents—"

"Look Lily, just—I don't want to talk about it. You don't understand."

"What don't I understand?" I asked, turning his face to look at me, and shivering at the coldness of his pale skin.

"You're parents are these great people... that love you—"

"Your parents love you."

He laughed cruelly. "I wish I had someone close to me like that."

"I'm here," I said softly, pulling him into a hug.

He was silent for a moment, and held onto me tighter. "I want someone to love me Lily. Like the way I love them—Like the way I love you."

I closed my mouth, and felt the warmth of his body.

"You never know," I said airily.

"I know you're going to find someone else when we leave school," he insisted.

"I'll always be there for you."

"Not the way I need you."

I looked up at him, and gave him a smell kiss on the cheek.

"You don't know that," I said barely above a whisper, against his chest.

We sat there quietly, hugging, as the first snow of the winter fell around us.
