Chapter 11: Trusting James

A/N: You know... I just realized... I can't have a fic without drama. So... I'll add some. This is an important part of any and all relationships: Trust. Lily is going to try to trust James. I'll see how this turns out. I've been thinking all day, and I've decided that I'll have to add some relationship things: it's not going to be picture perfect. Thanks for all your ideas (I've got an over-all plan of what to do now.) Happy reviewing!

Disclaimer: I own nothing.

Trusting James

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------

I'm so aggravated! James and I have been dating for a while now... it's almost February... he can't be cheating on me! But it seems so possible! He's rarely ever around me, and he seems to be avoiding me! First, he has to tutor these girls (one in sixth year and one in fifth) and then he has to work on a project with this Ravenclaw girl! He's always around one girl! He can't be cheating on me!

I know I should probably trust him. But it's so hard to when he's always around them. He spends more time with them... but he still makes time for Sirius Remus and Peter! Does he not want to be with me anymore? I feel the tears fall down my face as I sit silently in my room, late one Saturday evening. I would be down stairs... but he's down stairs... with her.

He has to tutor Emmeline Vance. She's a pretty fifth year of Ravenclaw. Transfigurations is not her cup of tea... and that's why she's down stairs with James right now. She seems to be the one ALWAYS with him. He spends more time with her than me... and I'm jealous. I find myself creeping down the stairs to listen to their conversation.

"James you're so funny!" I heard the brunette girl say.

"Thanks," said James in what seemed to be a whisper. They were sitting on the couch now, I saw. "But don't talk so loud: I don't want to wake Lily."

"Of course," said Emmeline, who had one of those knowing looks. "She seems so nice."

"Yeah," said James, almost absently.

"When can I meet her?" asked the blue eyed girl eagerly.

"You can't—I mean..." James didn't bother to finish his sentence, and I felt more tears fall down my face.

Quickly I ran upstairs to grab my robe, and I slipped it on. When I walked down stairs, silently, I saw James and Emmeline go a little closer. I couldn't believe my eyes! He IS cheating on me. So before seeing what they were doing, and not stopping at his calls, I ran out of the portrait hole, and towards the Gryffindor common room. I wiped my eyes quickly and walked inside. Surprisingly I found my friends and James' sitting together. They looked up startled when I ran in.

"Lily—"

"Hey Lils—"

"Is James cheating on me?!" I asked outraged, moving over towards Sirius.

"What?!"

"Lily—"

"What would give you that idea?" asked Remus softly.

"He's never with me, he's always leaving, he's always with another girl, and he seemed pretty cozy on the couch with her last time I saw him!" I said, counting the events off on my fingers as I talked.

Nobody spoke or moved for a while. It seemed to make sense to them too, and I was looking for a sign that might tell me if James was cheating. Sirius and Remus looked grim; like they really needed to talk to James. Peter and my friends looked somewhere between shock and confusion.

"Lily—"I heard someone pant behind me, and I turned to see James. I sat down on the couch and ignored him.

"Lily, please talk to me!" begged James sitting next to me, and putting his arm around me.

"What?" I asked rudely. "Is Emmeline not enough for you? Or was I just that bad of a girlfriend?"

"WHAT?!" asked James, unwrapping his arm, with my help.

"I didn't stutter," I repeated a line I had heard him use too many times before.

"I don't know what you're talking about!" he yelled, as everyone started to stare.

"YOU'RE CHEATING ON ME!"

"WHAT?!"

"You heard me James. Everyone agrees with me," I said pointing to the group, who would have much rather been left out.

"I'm not cheating on you!"

"Sure!" I said, turning away from him. "Just don't talk to me. If you wanted to go with someone else so bad, at least you could have broken it off with me!"

"I'm not cheating!" he yelled again. "I didn't want to, and I don't want to go with Em. And I most definitely don't want to break up with you!"

"Em?! A pet name, huh James?" I sat up and prepared myself to do the hardest thing I ever had to do in my entire life.

Everything went silent... nobody made any noise... like they knew what I was going to do. Pulling my robe a little tighter around me I looked around the room that seemed to be a blur—

"Lily! Don't—"

"Don't what?" I asked, my eyes narrowing. "I should have known better. I should have known you wouldn't have changed."

"I've changed—"

"And I'm the Minister of Magic—"

"Maybe there's an explanation," cut in Remus.

"There is!" insisted James.

"If only I cared. I saw what I saw James. Go run off with Em. I really don't mind. With the fact that.... Oh I don't know... the fact that you're a single guy again."

James stood up next to me, as I ended my sentence, and everyone gasped. I knew we were possibly the cutest couple in Hogwarts history, and also the most unexpected. But James Potter was now a free man again. He didn't have that 'Lily-Evans-girl.' He didn't want this 'Lily-Evans-girl.'

"You—you're breaking up with me?!" he asked incredulously.

"Why are you so shocked? It's what you've wanted for the past month."

"I've never wanted to be without you," he said, trying to pull me closer.

"Don't touch me!" I said pulling away. "Well, you've got a funny way to show it. Running off with some girl—"

"I told her off for your information!" James said, and I stared... searching for the lie. I could tell, in those eyes, whether he was lying or not. My eyes softened... he looked like he meant it... like it was true.

"She tried to kiss me, and I moved as soon as you walked down stairs, and she came after me again!" said James, as the common room felt with girls, who undoubtedly already knew James was single.

"James—"I heard one girl say coming closer.

He held up his hand, "I'm talking to my girlfriend."

"I heard she dumped you—"

"How dare she?" another girl added.

"I wouldn't've dumped you—"

"Better luck for us—"

"Shut up!" said Sirius, and all the girls backed down.

"I love you, Lily," he said smiling slightly. "I don't want anyone else but you."

"Then why did you leave me?"

"I'll never leave you," he said, wiping a tear off my cheek.

"Yes you did," I said, tears pouring out of my eyes. "You were gone... you stopped being around me."

"Lily, I'm sorry..." he sighed. "I wanted it to be a surprise... but I was lying..."

I looked into James' eyes, as he stared back into mine, and I felt tears of regret.

"Lying?"

"I know your birthday's in two weeks... and I was planning to get you something... and to make you a party."

"But you hadn't any time," I insisted, "You were always tutoring or working with your partner—"

"I said I was because I wanted to have an excuse. I wanted it to be a surprise."

I cried against his shoulder, upset with myself for not believing him.

"I'm sorry James... I'm sorry," I said into his chest as he hugged me. "I didn't know—"

"Honestly... it's okay..."

"I want to make it up to you," I said, looking up at him. "If you'll have me back."

He kissed the top of my head. "I don't know, Lily."

Everyone in the room stared in amazement, and I pulled away wiping the tears off my face. Did I honestly just throw away the best thing that has ever happened to me? I nodded in defeat and walked away. But I felt his hand pull me closer, and into a hug.

"I was just kidding, you nutter!" he said, laughing, and I found myself laughing too.

"Really?" I asked, as he leaned down to kiss me.

He nodded, "Now about that offer to make it up to me..."

He put his arm around my shoulder, and I put mine around his waist, as he walked us to the portrait hole. I shot a look over my shoulder, to my grinning friends. I shrugged and laughed. As for the offer... James and I spent the night together... which we would be doing for the next two weeks... and we would end our days with "I love you" 's and not-so-innocent kisses.

A/N: I had to make a chapter like this. They're still together... so don't worry. But there'll be obstacles, and we all know Lily and James over come them. It'll be fun to read and write. Continue on reviewing please! I'll still take suggestions about what you want to see happen! Thanks! By the way: This might be all I post until Saturday! I've got a dance on Friday, so I won't be posting.
