Back To School
"Lily!"
"Hi, guys!" I exclaimed running into the arms of Edgar, Amelia, Dorcas and John.
"When did you get back!?"
"Last night," I answered pulling away from the hug.
"Sirius told us something!" said Dorcas, sitting us all down in the common room the next morning.
"We don't believe him, of course," Edgar said quickly.
"What did he say?" I asked, pretty sure of what it was.
"That you and James... you know... and your parents walked in!"
"He's such a bad liar. My parents didn't walk in," I replied laughing.
"So you DID!?" squealed Amelia.
"I'm not saying that," I replied looking at my finger nails in disinterest.
"Speaking of bad liars," laughed James, sitting down next to me.
"Oh, 'Melia! Dorcas! We've got to talk!" I said, pulling them out of the common room.
We walked through the portrait hole, having the girls say random things. I didn't speak the entire time as we walked down the stairs. We went to the grounds. On the way I said hullo to a couple Professors and friends from other houses. I had to admit that it was good to be back. I knew James was upstairs talking to the guys about what we had done at my home.
"Tell us!" screamed Dorcas.
I laughed as we reached our destination. "Okay... okay... I heard James and Sirius talking—"
"I want to know about the... you know... did you really—"
"Shag? Yes," I replied dully. "Now what Sirius said—"
"That bad?" asked Dorcas in shock. "The rumours aren't true?!"
"They have to be," Amelia said looking dumbfounded. "I've heard girls comparing his shags. 'He does this especially good!' 'No way! I totally squeal when he...' They have to be true!"
"This is my boyfriend we're talking about!" I said loudly. "I can't believe you're telling me what other girls say! This is ridiculous! How many other girls has he shagged?"
Dorcas and Amelia looked away. "We... uh... don't really know."
"Then why are you looking suspiciously around the grounds!?" I demanded. "How many other girls has he... 'been with'!?"
"Some girls could be lying... or imaging that he'd done stuff with them—"
"I'm sure he's not shagged everyone he's dated. Snog definitely," Dorcas said backing up what Amelia began to say.
I threw the stick I had been holding. "I was going to tell you that Sirius and James are trying to pull one over on me! But now I have to go ask Mr. Shags-every-other-girl how many times he's done it and why he's never told me. And I have to ask how much each meant and when that happened and where was I and—"
"Pull one over on you... how?" asked Dorcas, raising her eyebrows and ignoring my last rant.
"Sirius is trying to see if I want James as much as he wants me. I've heard him tell James repeatedly to wait for me to kiss him! And Sirius is definitely no sweet talker around James—"
"What do you mean? I got the part with no kissing. What about his sweet talking?"
"'Marriage is just sharing a name with your snog buddy!' Why? Has he told you different?"
"He hasn't told me he loved me, no," replied Dorcas earnestly.
"I'm sure he was just being a guy," said Amelia reassuringly.
"I'm sorry... didn't mean to put you on the spot there—"
"Sorry about letting the James' shag thing slip—"
My mind went back on track. "SLIP!? What do you mean slip!? Did he tell you not to tell me or some rubbish like that!? Why couldn't he just tell me himself?!"
"Maybe he thought you'd heard the rumours—"
"That's even worse! He won't tell me, he wants the whole school to do it for him?! In detail, no less!"
I ran towards the castle as fast as I could, listening to Dorcas and Amelia shout my name as they ran after me. I made it up to the fourth floor panting and they seemed to catch up. Once they tried to talk to me again I ran for it. He was laughing in the common room with the Marauders, John and Edgar when I came barging in. Dorcas and Amelia called my name as they reached the portrait hole and it made James look up at me.
"Hey, love. What's going on?" he asked. The smart ass.
"Absolutely nothing," I replied loudly, sitting in between John and Edgar, almost half on their laps.
"Why don't you come sit next to me?" offered James.
"I'd rather not," I replied looking away.
"Lils! Don't—"
"Don't what, Amelia? What am I doing? I'm just sitting here... I haven't been lying or holding secrets from anyone!"
"Did you girls get into a fight?" asked Edgar.
"Kind of," I replied pushing the hair out of my face.
"What about?" asked James.
"LILY!" yelled Dorcas. "We—"
"Does it matter? I mean... it's not like I've shagged anyone... else."
"What?" James asked, confusion covering his face.
"Nothing... it doesn't matter. I mean... Not everyone cares about love when they shag."
"What's going on?" John asked hesitantly.
"Stay out of this," ordered James not taking his eyes off of me. "Oh... I know what this is about."
"Good for you. Want a cookie?"
"This is about my old girlfriends, isn't it?"
"Girlfriend? They had to be your girlfriend to be bed worthy?"
"Lily!" said Sirius, Dorcas and Amelia at the same time.
"Dorcas and Amelia let it SLIP that more than half the girls you've snogged you've also shagged, James!" I informed.
"What?" asked James. "Where's your proof of that?"
"So you'd rather I know rumours then the truth?" I asked loudly.
All in on motion James pulled me off the couch and kissed me. I pulled away, slapping him across the face and making him fall back onto his chair.
"Don't think that I can forget about all the things you've kept from me by kissing me, James Potter!"
"James, you weren't supposed to kiss her!" hissed Sirius.
"Shut up, Sirius. I'm not playing your stupid game, anymore!" yelled James looking up at me. "Lily—"
"What game?" I asked falsely.
"Nothing—"
"No, James. Stop hiding things from me," I said firmly. "Stop pretending I'm the innocent girl you think I am. You can tell me who you've shagged! You can tell me who you've loved! You can tell me anything!"
"No I can't! You'll flip out!"
"Like you did on Amos?" I asked accusingly.
"There's a difference," he said quietly.
"And what would that difference be?" I asked loudly.
"You get upset if I look at any other girl!"
I laughed, "Oh bull! You cried when I decided to work for the Ministry with Amos!"
Everyone was staring at us now. James looked away. I stared at James. He looked away and I walked closer.
"You were my first! How come you never told me I wasn't your first?!"
"You did ask!"
"Did I have to?"
"Look Lils—"
"Don't try to pull this shit with me!" I yelled throwing my arms up.
"Look," he said calmly. "What does it matter what I do? Why does it matter that I did stuff before we got together?"
"It matters because you didn't tell me who, and why, James! You didn't tell me if it meant anything to you! You didn't say if it meant more to you than I do!"
"Nothing means more to me than you do," he said firmly but quietly.
"If it doesn't mean that much than why can't you tell me?" I asked, my hands still on my hips.
"Because I don't want to think about it. I know it's not a very comfortable thing to talk about. And it's not a comforting thought that I'm thinking of things that happened before you and I got together. Besides, you told me that you were scared that I expected you to do what my other girlfriends did."
"I know," I said softly. "But that doesn't mean I knew you'd done it a lot! Two or three different girls, maybe. A couple times, to say the least. But all those girls?"
Sirius stifled a laugh and James glared. I heard Sirius mutter. "A couple girls? A couple times? Where has she been?"
I looked away. "I wanted nothing to do with you, James. I didn't care what you did. I didn't want to hear the rumours because I didn't like you then. But I love you now and I care about how much you've done with someone that's not me!"
"I'm not going to go back to those girls, Lil—"
"I know that. But that doesn't give you the right not to tell me," I purged on. "It doesn't make me not care now."
James ruffled his hair subconsciously. "I'm sorry."
I looked away, ruffling my hair too. "I don't want to talk about it."
My friends let out their breaths. I looked around at them apologetically. They looked up at me. I clutched my cloak around me tighter and looked over at Dorcas and Amelia.
"I suppose I better go."
As I walked towards the portrait hole I was caught by James who pulled me into a hug. Sirius made an indignant nose from the other side of the room.
"Shut up," warned James. "I'm not doing anything any longer."
I pushed James away and I walked towards the door. "Bye."
James followed me out of the hole and entwined his hand with mine, but I pulled my hand away.
"Not tonight... I've got to think."
"About what?!"
"Sorry that I actually have to think about this relationship," I muttered. "Not like you... you just take whatever I throw at you, and then you turn around and kiss me."
"What are you talking about?"
"You know exactly what I'm talking about," I said stubbornly. "This is ridiculous. Just go back with Sirius and all them. I don't want to say something I'll regret."
"Do you plan on it?" he asked quietly and what seemed to be innocently.
"I don't plan on making this relationship harder," I said walking at a quicker pace. "Just go James."
He walked closer to me and took my hand again. "Lily."
"James... just go... I need a break from you."
"I love you," he said wrapping his arms around me.
I looked away. "Go, James."
"Don't be like this Lily," he pleaded.
I kissed him on the lips. "There's the kiss you want. There's the kiss you've been waiting for! Now GO!"
"Waiting for?"
"I heard you talking to Sirius—"
"I'm not doing that anymore—"
"You shouldn't have done it to begin with!"
"I'm sorry—"
"Do you really get that bored with our relationship that you need to make it better by trying to see how much I need to kiss you?"
"Talking about being truthful. You heard me and you never told me!"
"There's a difference between keeping quiet about the conversations I hear and you keeping quiet about things you've done before you were with me."
I stared at him. "Whatever," he stated.
"You're so... James," I answered. "I'll see you later."
I stalked away and this time, James didn't follow. I half wondered if I wanted him to follow me or if I didn't. I decided to just go to sleep and not think about the situation at hand. Well... until tomorrow.
