Nothing to See

Disclaimer: Not mine.

Author's Note: I wrote this a while ago, but I've never in my life posted a drabble, and I didn't really want to start. Then I reread it, decided I liked it too much not to post it and… here it is.

Summary: It's nothing that anyone who wasn't looking would see. Olivia/Alex from an outside POV.

Rating: G

It's nothing that anyone who wasn't looking would see. It's certainly nothing that Alex, in all her bulldog-tenacity, could prosecute. And they've never made any conscious slips, anything at all that would make either of them go "oops." But what they don't realize is that Elliot has long years of being married behind him, and what Munch, Fin and Cragen don't see because they've never been there or it's been too long, is that people familiar with each other are constantly making unconscious mistakes.

It started the day that Alex showed up in SVU and Olivia's eyes blazed when she talked about her. Elliot took a step back and mentally prepared himself for a lot of tension. Of course, he didn't always help…

But now, nearly two years later, it's something entirely different. It's Olivia sitting in the chair in front of where Alex is standing, when the chair is being unconsciously avoided by the rest of the squad because it's just a little too far into the ADA's body space. It's Alex sidling up to the detectives and resting two inches closer to Olivia than Elliot. It's the way Olivia's eyes dilate just a little whenever she gets sent to pick up Alex or make the phone call to her office.

It's nothing anyone else would see. And they obviously don't know they're doing it. But Elliot is well aware of how body space becomes immaterial when you've known someone well enough and long enough, and how it can make your heart do a little jump just to see or hear The One in the course of your day.

He never tells Olivia, and he never gets a chance to tell Alex.
