AN: Short piece, 4 ensigns on shoreleave speculate about…things.

And the days when you feel like the wind is only howling at you, trying to blow you back, hold you back. And you're on your little boat, sailing towards the horizon. There's probably a beautiful sunset at the same time. But sunsets are always beautiful on sea. Especially when that sea is made of dreams and hopes you still cherish. You could probably add some nice memories, too. But then you have to add the bad ones also, and that might just change the whole mood of the scene.

Those are the days when you feel like you have to endure so much, but you know that there's something beautiful waiting for you when you finally reach the horizon. Though how you can ever reach horizons is beyond me. But that's besides the point.

The water of the sea is probably clear blue, and you can see everything through it. Or maybe, if you're one of those persons who prefer that it's made of all kinds of colors, and it reflects the sky, which seems to be on fire because of the setting sun.

Though the sunset will be soon forgotten, it may come back as a memory on the most unexpected of times.

"Like now?"

"Yeah, like now."

But the sea, and the sunset, and the horizon would be nothing without that wind trying to hold you back. Everything looks and feels so much better when you have gone through a lot to get there.

Would the view of mount Everest really be so nice if the first person to climb it only had to endure a few minutes of walking up stairs?

Well, I can't really give an opinion about that, because I just don't know. But it's all speculation, right?

Compare it to the Enterprise Would space and all those beautiful alien worlds really be so magnificent if everybody could just go there and back again in 10 minutes? I don't think so. It's the endurance and the feeling of going somewhere new and unexplored. It's knowing you can go anywhere you like with that ship. With Enterprise

It's Freedom, baby.

"And kind of creepy, not knowing what's waiting for us behind every asteroid. Probably something that wants to blow us the hell out of the sky."

"Don't ruin the mood. You've spend too much time with Lieutenant Reed."

Anyway, you can't boldly go on forever. Even the greatest of heroes needs a break now and then, when the wind calms down or when you just hide behind a rock to avoid it. A bit of rest for everyone once in a while.

"That's called shoreleave."

"Bingo."

But sometimes when you finally reach the horizon, it's not exactly what you expected. The colors are not as nice, the water not as blue, the sun not yet setting. Disappointment is such a sad thing.

"To high an expectation."

"To enthusiastic."

"Like all those new and young ensigns. They think space is always beautiful and nice. A trip to wonderland."

"And back comes the feeling of creepiness, most of them aliens really do want to blow us up."

And sometimes the stars do look nicer when you're down here, on your back in the grass of an alien planet. Looking up at the sky and seeing all of them twinkling lights.

"Wow."

"Yeah."
