Brigid stared angrily at her computer. It took far too long for websites to load. She kept encouraging her boss to buy DSL, but never succeeded. She was stuck with and out of date dial up program. Brigid hated to wait for webpages to load. Ever since her last rendezvous with Nate, Brigid began to hate many things. The formerly perky admissions worker was now easily annoyed by the smallest of things.
For one thing, she hated seeing happy couples walk down the street. What upset her was how she knew one half of the pair would end up heartbroken and betrayed. Betrayal was what she felt at the moment thanks to a certain Archibald. Brigid hated how the couple's happiness wouldn't last forever. Something would go wrong. The end may come through a long string of hurtful events. It may come abruptly. The point is that an end was coming.
More than anything, Brigid hated men. She had come to a decision that they were not worth her time. There were no more dates. There was no sex. She didn't feel like wasting her time dreaming of a knight in shining armor. Even if she found one, the love wouldn't last forever. She'd find herself more miserable than before. If there was one man she hated, it was Nate Archibald. Brigid couldn't believe how stupid she was for sleeping with him. Nate's parting hurt Brigid intensely. She thought he genuinely liked her. All he wanted was a quick fuck. Did he even realize how much he hurt her?
Brigid didn't even know how much hurt she was going to feel from Nate. The worst was about to come.
Mona Lombardi, the chipper red head from down the hall, stuck her head into Brigid's office. She was early. The plan was that she'd go out to lunch with Brigid at 12:30. Mona hoped her friend wouldn't mind leaving a little early. For an inexplicable reason, Brigid had become quite irritable when schedules weren't precisely followed. Actually, whenever something didn't work perfectly Brigid was annoyed. Mona couldn't stand the changes in her once spontaneous friend.
"Why are you so early? Shouldn't you be working right now?" Brigid asked, a little startled by the sudden appearance of Mona.
"I'm finished for the morning. Come on, let's just go down to the café now. You've been working too hard lately. I think you deserve a nice cappuccino as a reward."
"Alright, you win! I'll be ready in a minute. Just let me find my purse," Brigid said.
"One second, I need to run to the bathroom." Mona searched her purse. She rolled her eyes. How could she forget to pack tampons on the day of her heaviest flow? "Mind if I borrow a tampon?"
Brigid nodded her head. She began to concentrate on putting her paperwork away when a frightening thought hit her. When did she last have her period? She counted down the days since she last had it. Horror stuck her when she realized she should have had it two weeks ago. Why had she missed? Brigid hoped she was just a little late. Hopefully she'd find herself running to her office for a tampon later that day.
If not, Brigid would have to make a phone call to the Archibald residence.
