Don't own KH.
Sora was standing on the beach when Riku and Kairi found him, clutching a yellow fruit. He had told them both that he needed to talk to them, and that it was important. Usually, they would have just ignored something that by Sora's priorities was "important." But he had seemed serious, so here they were.
"Sora!" Kairi was the first to run over, and he turned to face her. He held out the fruit, looking somewhat nervous and a tad flushed.
"Here. It's a paopu."
Kairi didn't take the star-shaped fruit, instead looking down at it and picking at its leaves anxiously. "Yeah, so?"
Sora performed a purposeful fall into the sand, laying back and holding the paopu in the air over his head. "Haven't you ever heard? If people who care about each other share one, they'll be together forever."
Black-gloved fingers pulled the paopu from Sora's hands.
"Come on, Sora, don't tell me you believe that."
Sora brought his hands back to rest at his sides as he examined the night sky. The stars were just starting to come out, tiny lights against a sea of darkening blue. "I thought it might be worth a shot. After all, we're friends, right?"
With that, Riku turned and threw the fruit toward the distant horizon. It landed some distance away, vanishing into the sea.
"Riku, what'd you do that for?" Kairi put her hands on her hips and gave Riku a scowl, though his back was turned. "Sora picked that for us. Now we can't share one."
"We don't need it," Riku replied, wind mussing his hair into strands of tossed silver.
"Huh?" Sora sits up, blinking.
"We don't need it," Riku repeated, turning around. He offered them a smile. "We already have each other, right? I don't plan on leaving either of you behind. Not now or anytime."
Sora grinned and nodded. "We'll promise, then. Wherever we go, we go together."
"It's a promise!" Kairi chirped, holding out her hand. Sora and Riku placed their hands atop hers.
"Yeah, a promise," Riku replied. "And we don't need a paopu."
Sora just laughed. "Told you two it was important."
He found himself ducking a fist of Riku's shortly after, and the three ran down the beach together, all three of them laughing.
