She's not selfish, she just never had anyone else to care for before but herself, and it takes some getting adjusted to. She's done all this work to get to the point where she can give herself anything she pleases, and suddenly, she's got him and them. Suddenly she's got this other person, this other set of feelings she can only guess at.
She likes him to be happy, partly because she just likes to see him smile and party because he deserves to be happy. She likes to think it's her that makes him happy, having her around to pick him up and being there to pick her up. He's saved her many times and she plans on being around to pay him back.
Destiny or debt, Mai takes whatever reason she can to keep him by her side.
