A Word Between Friends

"The ladies want me. They've always wanted me. An' I've been only too happy to oblige. Just mention Captain Jack Sparrow to the lovelies an' the not so lovelies of the Caribbean – the entire Caribbean, mate – an' they'll tell ya, he always leaves 'em well sated an' smiling. No harm. No foul. As it were."

He shifted slightly with the roll of the Pearl and absently stroked one finely defined cheek, the sting of a thousand slaps fresh in his memory.

"No foul, at any rate."

There was a pause in the monolog as the Captain glanced at Parrot, who stood watch between the seasoned hands resting on the great wheel. The agile bird stepped over one grimy wrist as Jack made a minor adjustment to their course.

"But of a sudden, things are changed." Parrot cocked his head to one side, listening intently. "It's me that wants. Wants in a way that makes me think I am daft after all. How did this happen?"

Jack abruptly looked up at the sky, heaved a short impatient breath, squared his shoulders and looked straight at the bird.

"Your honor as a pirate and a parrot, mate?"

Parrot sidled over to place one great foot tentatively on the Captain's hand, sharp nailed black toes wrapping gently around one long, unusually still, finger. He returned Jack's look with a steady eye.

Another sharp huff of breath.

"Damn it all! I love her!"

"Accidents will happen," said Parrot, and still clinging to the Captain's finger, began to preen.
