Disclaimer: If I owned Inuyasha, writing stuff like this would probably be just a tad further down on my 'to do' list. ;)

This chapter and those done in the futureare for my Renkotsu claim at the Livejournal community Inuyasha no Kakera (iynokakera).

Summary: Ambition and hard work can take anyone places. In one instance, they took an abandoned, nameless boy from serving monks at a temple to being second in command of the most fearsome mercenary group in feudal Japan.

The boy without a name.

For years, that's what he'd been. And to the world, it appeared, if you didn't have a name, you didn't really matter in the long run.

But...what if he wanted to? What if he dared dream that one day, he would?

He was naturally smart – a genius almost, it sometimes seemed; no one could deny that once they'd met him. Still, though, he couldn't go far. He'd probably die without ever once stepping foot outside the temple where he'd been found as a baby.

Or so they thought.

Every time they patted him good-naturedly on the head, every time they told him he should be content with what little he had, every time they chuckled at the wild stories this boy told about teaching himself to read, to fight, and oddly enough, to breath fire; every time they did these things, they only increased his resolve.

Before long, it wasn't a question of 'maybe'. He would rise above this life. Above the family who'd abandoned him. Above the twits who told him he couldn't do better. Above anyone who questioned his worth.

Ambition and hard work can take anyone places – this he set out to prove, and successful he was in doing so.

For one day, he would have not only a name, but a job, money, respect, and even...even friends (if he dared admit to himself that they were such).

One day, he would be Renkotsu of the Shichinin-tai.
