It was late morning, and the hustle and bustle of the California town was in full swing. Some people hurried about their errands, some strolled, others stood stock-still, and one of the town drunks already staggered down the street bellowing out a song.

In the everyday clamor, few noticed the tall man in dark clothing that emerged from the hotel. A stranger in town on business most likely. From the successful smile on his face, one could surmise his business had gone well. The strikingly handsome man slung his saddlebags over one shoulder and walked across the dusty road with an air of self-assuredness. He tipped his black hat to a lady or two that he passed on his way towards the livery stable.

The little man who ran the stables jumped up from his cozy seat on a bale of hay when he saw the stranger approach. The man in black spoke a few words to the stable owner. The deep baritone quality of his voice could faintly be heard over the noise of the streets. The smaller man quickly disappeared into the shadows of the stable followed by the stranger.

Not long afterwards, the dark stranger led a chestnut colored horse from the livery and tossed the little man a coin. He smoothly mounted and, with a friendly nod, rode swiftly out of the town.

Unknown to him, from a corner by a store, was a figure that had carefully watched his every move since he left the hotel. The person stood silently, continuing to gaze after the stranger even as he rode away. A peculiar light came to the observer's eyes, but none of the busy townspeople noticed. Then a tear fell.

"Come Regina. Thee knows we must make haste with the supplies." Said a voice from inside the store.

"I art coming, Matthew."

She stared one more moment at the empty road. He had crossed her life again. She knew love was never simple, but why did hers have to be impossible? Quickly, she brushed the tear aside. There was no use crying over what could never be.

"Bless thee, Adam." She whispered then moved away from where she had been temporarily frozen. There was work to be done.
