Sanzo's smile
Hey Guys! This is a one shot. Just a crazy idea I had. So sue me! Definitely not as good as my Chosen for Saiyuki but an okay read.
It was their second night in the hotel. Goku had gotten up in the middle of the night and had snuck down to the kitchen in hope of a late night snack. That looked like it was going to go on all night. Suddenly, Goku, in midst of a pork bun, heard a sound. As he looked up at the door, Sanzo whooshed in.
"Stupid baka. Are you eating again?" asked an irritable Sanzo, wearing only his black top and pants. "I was hungry" whined Goku, a look of absolute innocence on his face. "You're always hungry, you monkey," grumbled Sanzo sitting down on a chair. He took out his packet of cigarettes and lit one.
Goku happily continued on eating. Then he suddenly looked up with a confused expression. Sanzo didn't notice. Goku thought about how to ask Sanzo this, taking a sip of his Coke, and pondering. Finally, he felt brave enough to ask Sanzo the question. "Sanzo, can I ask you something?"
Sanzo grunted, "Whether I say yes or no, you're still gonna ask me, so fine." Goku smiled. "Sanzo, why do you never smile?" There was silence. A silence so loud that it was deafening. Suddenly, Sanzo scrambled from his chair and ran out of the door, slamming it so hard that Goku was sure that he had woken the rest of the guests.
He frowned. Why did Sanzo run out? Had he asked something bad? His appetite suddenly forgotten, he got up from his chair and went to his room, where he had an extremely uneasy sleep. For he could not forget the pain and torture that had flashed in Sanzo's deep violet eyes.
What had he done?
Sanzo ran out of the hotel's kitchen. He slammed the entrance door and started walking quickly. His hand were thrust in to his pockets, his eyes were brimming with tears.
Why don't I smile? What a stupid question! I haven't smiled since……… since………he……………………..died.
Sanzo fell on his knees, his body racking with heart-felt sobs. Ever since, his master had died. Why should he smile? The only person he had ever truly loved was his master and now he was gone, why did he need to smile.
Sanzo had always smiled in his youth. He was known for his cheery smile at the temple.
Sanzo cried his heart out, next to the river that flowed near the inn, at the edge of a forest, only the moon hearing his sobs. Eventually, he depleted his supply of tears, and slowly trudged back to his room, feeling physically and mentally exhausted. Sanzo dropped into the bed, immediately falling to a dreamless sleep.
Unknown to him, Goku was watching him at the door. Goku leaned against the doorframe, his head feeling decidedly confused.
What had he done?
The next morning, Sanzo ignored Goku completely. It was like Goku wasn't even there. Gojyo and Hakkai could barely satisfy their curiosity but they wisely shut up. They traveled the entire day in silence. Not once did Goku say his trademark whine, "Sanzo, I'm hungry"
Then when that stopped at night and decided to stay at another inn., Goku and Sanzo wound up having to share a room. Sanzo immediately lit a cigarette.
Goku soundlessly got ready for bed. As the saru slid under the covers, he looked at Sanzo. He was so unhappy that he had upset his sun. Goku suddenly had an idea. He knew how to fix this. But first he need to know why.
"Ne, Sanzo, you never answered my question."
Sanzo visibly stiffened, but answered anyway, "You want to know why I never smile? Because I don't have a reason too."
Goku was perplexed, "but Sanzo, you do have a reason to smile."
"Oh yeah, what?" the monk scorned.
"Me," whispered Goku and drifted off in to a blissful sleep.
And just visible, in the moonlight, You could see the corner's of Sanzo's mouth lift in to a smile.
FINISH.
