A/N a little thing I came up with watching Locard's Exchange, and Woody's comment that Jordan and Renee were so alike it was scary...and of course, a Garret/Jordan shipper springs on that line to go "hmmm..."and thus this was born. Don't own them though, don't particularly want to either, unless it would mean getting my feature length film to be produced and star Miguel...
"Those two are so alike it's scary." The young detective's words hung in his head, constantly repeating themselves. It was true, far too true. They were alike, and he knew it-it was what had drawn him to the other woman, the fact that she was so similar to the one that hung right under his nose on a daily basis.
When he heard what had happened to Renee, he was instantly sympathetic towards her, but at the same time he couldn't shake the nagging guilty feeling that he was only glad that it had been Renee and not her. He was glad that it was the strong DA who carried a gun for her own protection that had left the building, and not the other one that the bastard had his eye on.
He had heard of the way that the now dead and would be rotting man had stared at the woman he truly loved, and he knew that if that man had dared to touch her that he would have been dead, killed with sheer strength and bare hands, out of sheer rage.
He didn't know what he would do if she were to ever get hurt. He loved her, it was a pure, unadulterated love, something that was a part of him, the very thing that kept him going at times. And Renee knew it, she knew that she was the third wheel, that while he went through the motions she would always be in second place, that there was no one who would ever be in his life the way she was.
Renee was just a substitute, a surrogate, someone that he could pass off in his mind as good enough. They were so similar. They both had the dark hair and delicate features that drew him in, they both had the same stubborn, wild streak that stopped nothing from getting in their way, they were so similar, and yet, so very different.
Renee was merely someone that he could pretend with, someone who was close enough that she would catch some outer rim of his feelings, just from being so much like the woman he truly loved. And Renee knew it, she sensed it from the start that she'd never have his heart, not truly, and he knew that it's why things just wouldn't work out, no matter how hard he tried, he knew that he had already resigned himself to fate, that he would never have the one that he really wanted.
And so he had gone for the next best thing. He really did care for Renee, and when he had heard what happened to her, he had been upset, sympathetic, but always in that corner of his mind he tried to block out the thought of what if it had been the other dark haired girl with evil in her eyes that had walked out first. No, instead he settled for a substitute, someone that he could care for, that was close enough that he could always imagine it was her, and so Renee was the woman who vicariously was the one that he had given up his heart to already, but always, it was her in his dreams.
