Her eyes glanced to the wall-clock once, twice, maybe three times, watching the charmed clock count down the last few hours until the book's release. Fingers tapping her desktop in a cascading drumbeat, Hermione struggled to concentrate on her parchment as midnight drew nearer and nearer.
Releasing a heavy sigh, Hermione pushed her chair back, the scrapping of the wood on wood loud in the small room. I give up, she thought, and with a whispered Evanesco, her work disappeared from sight.
In another few minutes, and another glance or two at the wall-clock, Hermione was out the door of her Leaky Cauldron room, rented strictly for its proximity to the bookstore, and headed toward Flourish and Blotts.
Silly, silly, silly, her mind chanted. As if the book won't be there in the morning. Do I really need to get it at exactly midnight?
Her feet paced the cobble-stone floor in endless anticipation, the soft clap-clap of her shoes the only sound to be heard. She anxiously looked into the dark window of the store, wondering why she was the only person here waiting. Surely, there are others as excited about this book's release as I am?
Midnight. Finally. She knocked on the door, once, twice, maybe three times. A light came on, and the shop owner poked out his head.
"Oh, are you here for the book release party, then?" he said blearily, having just been awakened by the knock on his door.
"Yes, yes, of course!" Hermione exclaimed.
"Why, I wasn't expecting anyone. Come in, come in!"
Hermione rushed into the shop, and picked up the first copy of the book that she saw. Stroking its green cover, she felt a flutter of excitement.
I've waited two years for this, she thought, clutching the large book to her chest.
She was the first and only one in line to pay for it.
Hogwarts: A Revised History. In my hands at last.
