Unwanted Confrontations

Hermione glared hatefully at her toast. Harry offered her a warm friendly smile, but knew it was hopeless. He had seen that look on Hermione's face before.

"Stop trying to cheer me up," Hermione replied sulkily.

"Why don't send him an owl. I'm sure he feels like an idiot about what happened," Harry tried.

Hermione tutted, "If there is one thing I've learned is boy don't apologize."

"I apologize," Harry argued, but Hermione silenced him with a single look.

"You're still going with us to the Quidditch World Cup, aren't you?" Harry asked.

Hermione answered simply by rolling her eyes.

"I'm sure Ron still wants you to come," Harry attempted.

"If Ronald wants me to go then he can ask me," Hermione said firmly as she began glaring at her toast again.

Harry shook his head; he knew it was a hopeless cause. Susan, Michael and Noel took a seat next to the two, and Harry gladly welcomed their company.

"What was that about the World Quidditch cup?" Michael asked with a grin. Hermione merely 'tutted' under her breath and continued glaring.

Harry paused to study her for a moment before responding; "I was just asking Hermione if she was going with us to the World Quidditch Cup."

"Who's playing again?" Susan asked, acting interesting, although Harry knew she didn't like Quidditch.

"France and Australia," Michael replied looking slightly repulsed that Susan didn't keep up with the world of Quidditch statistics.

"England should have been in it," Harry sighed, "Shame, really."

Hermione let a loud sound of annoyance escape her as she quickly rose from her seat and left the group staring after her.

"Still hasn't made up with Ron, huh?" Susan observed.

Harry shrugged, "They'll be fine. The two of them live for a good argument"

"I can't believe Ron got tickets to the World Quidditch Cup, it's going to be amazing," Michael said as he wrapped some eggs and bacon into his toast, "have you ever been to St. Petersburg before?"

"Lovely place. The history in the city is absolutely amazing," Noel muttered, as she were merely making a comment from outside the conversational circle.

"Don't suppose you're much of a Quidditch fan?" Harry said turning his attention to Noel.

"They don't play Quidditch at Solara School for the Magical Arts, but I've always been fond of the Holyhead Harpies," Noel said sharply as if asked a foul question.

"Oh, I love the Harpies!" Michael exclaimed, "Did you know Gryffindor's former Quidditch Captain plays for them? I wonder if Gwenog Jones is really a tough as she looks?"

"She'd have to be, she is a beater," Michael argued with himself, "but then again, so was Parvati Patil."

"Patil may have been tiny, but she had a nasty swing," Harry said as he recalled the bludgers she use to aim at his head.

Susan smiled politely as she flashed Harry a confused look. It was true; the girl knew nothing about Quidditch.

"Since you're a Quidditch fan, Noel, want to come with us?" Michael asked causing Harry to flash him a pleading look.

Noel laughed rudely under her breath, "What makes you think I have any interest in watching two worthless teams beat themselves into comas?"

"You're right, who would want to do something like that," Harry retorted, relieved she had declined Michael's offer. He had a feeling Noel wouldn't fit in to well with the rest of the group going.

"I wouldn't mind going. Maybe you guys could teach me a little about Quidditch," Susan said nervously.

"These idiots only know how to fly around on their broomsticks, I doubt either of them could actually play, much less teach," Noel snickered.

Susan gave Noel a sympathetic smile, knowing what was coming next.

"Are you insane? Harry here was one of the best Quidditch players, EVER, at Hogwarts. He was the first, first year in a century to make the house team! He was undefeated, unless you count that time Diggory stole the game from him in third year. Harry is probably the best Seeker I've ever seen! Even Viktor Krum told Harry he was an amazing flyer!" Michael revealed.

Harry lowered his head trying to keep the red from flushing into his cheeks.

"Modest are we, Potter?" Noel asked as she noticed Harry's sudden drop from the conversation.

Harry scowled and glared over towards Michael, "Diggory beat me fair and square. Even Wood agreed. You weren't bad either Michael."

Michael sat a little taller, "I could put up a pretty good chase, but we never could get it right. I wish Ravenclaw could have one the Quidditch Cup at least once."

Noel rolled her eyes, "I hate to interrupt this trip down memory lane, but we're going to be late for potions."

"So, you want to come with us or not?" Michael asked as he looked at Noel.

Noel narrowed her eyes for a second then grinned, "Why not. I suppose it could be slightly entertaining."

"Wonderful," Harry muttered sarcastically under his breath as Susan let out a slight chuckle.

Michael beamed as Noel's grin faded back into her normal sour expression, "Excellent! You're welcome to share my tent once we get to the campgrounds. They'll be other girls there of course. Parvati, Padma and Lavender are all attending, but you won't want to share a tent with that lot. Seamus and Ernie will be in there bugging the entire time."

"Tent?" Noel asked looking slightly taken back.

Susan interrupted, "Don't listen to him. Padma Patil would never allow Seamus and Ernie to stay the night in the girls' tent."

Michael continued to smile, "I'm sure she wouldn't object if Neville joins them."

Susan eyes widened, "Longbottom?"

"Do you know any other Neville?" Harry asked, realizing Susan hadn't been informed of Padma's new relationship.

"Padma is dating Neville Longbottom?" Susan asked again as the puzzle began to assemble in her mind, "So that was the unbelievable news Parvati could only tell me face to face."

"I was curious why Parvati and Lavender hadn't told you yet," Harry admitted, "I figured you knew before Padma did herself."

Noel rolled her eyes in annoyance, increasing her pace to get away from the chatting group.

Harry gave Michael an exasperated look, "You just had to invite the ice queen didn't you?"

"Come on Harry. Don't you think you're being a bit harsh?" Michael asked.

Harry sighed, "You don't have to work with her."

"But I definitely wouldn't complain if I did," Michael admitted with a cheeky grin.

Noel was a good twenty feet away from the group, not bothering to look back as she rounded the corner of the corridor.

"She really isn't as bad as you think, Harry," Susan tried, "I think the tough edge is just a front because you intimidate her."

"Well, that explains it," Harry retorted sarcastically.

As the three rounded the corner Harry felt an impact, which pushed him backwards a few steps.

"Sorry."

Michael gave Susan a nervous glace as Harry found himself face to face with his former girlfriend. Cho's eye grew wide as she dropped down to her knees to pick up a stack of papers she had been carrying.

"Are you alright," Harry asked quickly as he bent down to help her.

"Fine," Cho said quietly, purposely avoiding his eyes.

Susan nudged Michael; "We'll see you in a minute, Harry." The two scuttled down the corridor quickly leaving Harry and Cho alone.

The tension was thick enough to cut with a knife as Harry rose and offered Cho a hand.

"How have you been?"

Cho took a deep breath, "Good."

"I heard about the vampire attack," Harry continued looking as if he was questioning his decision to bring up the subject.

"It was nothing. Eros thinks it was just an isolated incident. He probably just sensed me in Diagon Alley that day," Cho replied.

"So I take it the two of you are doing well together?" Harry asked, trying desperately to keep the bitterness out of his voice.

Cho looked startled by the statement but nodded, "Fine."

"So, what are these things?" Harry asked as he glanced down at the arm full of paper's he had just handed back to Cho. He didn't think he could stomach much more talk about Eros Raymer.

Cho smiled nervously, "Statistically sheets for December. I'm helping her with…."

"With what?" Harry asked as Cho suddenly trailed off.

"Just some research," Cho covered, "She has a lot of loose ends to tie up before she resigns her head position."

"She's resigning?" Harry asked, "I haven't heard anything about that."

Cho blushed slightly as she glanced down the corridor, her mind wishing for an escape, "Of course she is resigning. She couldn't have me as a student if she wasn't. It's frowned upon."

Harry looked completely puzzled, "What are you talking about?"

"Haven't you heard? Master O'Riley is my new mentor," Cho explained.

Harry's face froze as Cho's cheek turned a deep scarlet, "I really need to get these to her."

"Right," Harry said quickly as he shook himself out of shock.

Cho forced a smile as she started down the corridor again.

Harry stared at the wall for a moment then blurted out before he could gain control of his thoughts, "I'm glad you're back."

Cho stopped for a second then glanced over her shoulder giving him an appreciative smile.

Their first conversation since their break-up and he had made a mess of it as usual. She looked great, really. Harry frowned as he scowled himself. What had he expected? Harry knew what he had been expecting. He had been expecting Cho to cry over losing him and come begging for him back. He had expected to see her turn into an emotional wreck as she had with Cedric.

The news of December O'Riley resigning her position as Head of Auror training barely registered with Harry. He was too busy brooding over the reason Eros wasn't Cho mentor anymore. It was obvious; relationships between Mentors and Students were probably frowned upon. That had to be the reason Cho tried to quit.

Somehow Harry found his feet working again as he headed towards the potions lab. He would have preferred not to attend any lesson that day, his mind wouldn't be any good.
As if someone had been listening to his inner most thoughts, his wish was granted.

"Harry, I've been looking for you everywhere!" Tonks explained as she came out of the potions lab.

"Is something wrong?" Harry asked.

Tonks smiled nervously, "No, no….nothing is wrong. Do you have your wand with you?"

Harry nodded.

"May I see it for a moment?" Tonks asked.

Harry glanced awkwardly at Tonks. He almost handed his wand over willingly but didn't. Perhaps Mad-Eyes paranoia had finally rubbed off.

"Why do you want to see my wand?" Harry asked slowly, his hand lingering over his pocket.

Tonks smiled, "Master Moody will be happy you questioned my motives. You have a meeting this morning, Harry. Master O'Riley has requested I seize your wand until after then."

"Whom do I have a meeting with?" Harry asked, still leery.

Tonks sighed, "I really think this is better left as a surprise."

"Then you aren't getting my wand," Harry argued.

"Fine, Master Eros Raymer has requested a conference with you and Master O'Riley doesn't wanting you losing your temper," Tonks revealed in defeat.

"Raymer, what does he want?" Harry said bitterly, as Tonks frowned, " Sorry, Master Raymer."

"I'm not sure Harry, but you can ask Master Raymer yourself," Tonks replied, "Your wand please."

Harry narrowed his eyes before harshly pitching his wand to his mentor, "So did someone seize his wand to?"

"Master Raymer knows better than to attack a student," Tonks sighed.

"But I can't be trusted," Harry spat, "That's just wonderful. Tell Master O'Riley I'm flattered by her faith."

"You have a reason to dislike Master Raymer. Master O'Riley just doesn't want to take any chances," Tonks said softly as she started down the corridor, motioning for Harry to follow. He was in such a foul mood he didn't even break a smile with Tonks tripped and crashed into a wall.

They finally arrived at a conference room and Tonks led Harry in and exited, closing the doors behind her.

"I'm glad you cold make it, Harry," Eros greeted, "I know how much of a bother it is missing class."

"Your Skin Blotching Draft needs to be submitted before tonight," Master Wallace said quickly as he swept though the room, "You must pay extremely close attention to the details of this potion, it is extremely complicated and fast moving. I want each of you to keep a journal of the progress of the draft. Details, you must pay attention to detail, you turn your attention away for a moment and the potion is useless."

Noel looked fiercely over the ingredient list making a mental note to memorize each one. Potions was her best subject. The intricate detail and complete patients that is potions making was something she had often turned to when her life had fallen apart.

Susan clumsily tapped her ladle on the side of her caldron. Noel cut her eyes in irritation. Susan's potion was ruined because she didn't care about the detail. The potion called for a light tap to arouse the Blood Lotts and Essences of Murlap, anything lighter than a light tap would merge the two ingredients and cause the Skin Blotching Draft to turn into a Skin Blistering Draft. Any idiot should know that.

Noel tapped her caldron correctly, grinning at her own brilliance. Now the potion would have to settle for two hours before it had to be stirred counter clockwise six and three quarters of a time. There was still a little time until the end of class so she began flipping though the dictionary of modern potions.

Susan smiled as Noel glanced up.

"What are you looking for?" Susan whispered.

Noel wrinkled her nose as she tried to figure out why Susan would be concerned with what she was reading when she had just ruined her potion.

"Shouldn't you be concerned with you own potion?" Noel asked.

Susan shrugged, "I think it will be alright."

Noel rolled her eyes as she flipped another page.

A Binding of Love

ingredients:
Kelltone Oil
Dragon Heartstring, cut finely in 3 cm pieces
Essences of Murlap
Gillstone chips
Rictololous Heart
Bat Wings
Boggart Droppings
Doxie Dust

The potion will bind any living creature to another. It is unbreakable once the potion is distributed. Side effect includes bleeding heart, schizophrenia and eventually suicidal death. The Governing Council of the Magical Classification of Restricted Potions restricts this potion.

Susan tried to glance over to see what potion Noel was looking at but she was already flipping though the book looking frantically for another potion.

"Was that a binding potion?" Susan asked.

Noel had stopped on another page and quickly marked it.

Time Limiting Draft

Noel flipped the book shut and threw it into her bag muttering something under her breath as she walked out of the classroom. Susan stared after her curiously.

Eros Raymer motioned for Harry to take a seat, "I requested a conference with you to discuss Cho Chang."

"What about her?" Harry asked as he reluctantly took a seat.

Raymer sighed, "I own you an apology. When you take your own student, you'll understand."

"When I take my own student I won't try to make them fall in love with me," Harry retorted.

Eros narrowed his eyes but kept his calm tone, "As you have probably heard Cho isn't under my direct guidance currently. Master O'Riley feels it is better for Cho to work under her until she shows more emotional and metal confidence. It is a miracle she's been allowed to remain in training this long."

"I assume it was for other reasons," Harry confessed.

Eros grinned, "You mean my personal relationship with Miss. Chang."

Harry clenched his fist, willing himself not to punch the smirk right off Eros face.

"I have to admit, she is an amazing creature. Perhaps our fascination with her is the only thing the two of us will ever agree on," Eros continued, "But it is not in the best interest of the department for us to fight over Cho's love."

"I'm glad you have your priorities in order," Harry replied bitterly.

"Indeed. Cho and I have ended our relationship. It is in the best interest of the Academy and the department. It wasn't an easy decision. After your little episode the other night in the main hall, we were forced to make a decision. I convinced her to choose her career over me," Eros revealed slowly.

"So why aren't you her mentor anymore?" Harry asked, hoping to catch a glimmer of the truth.

Eros lowered his head, "It was my decision, but Cho doesn't know. She was going to quit the training. She told me she wanted to settle down and marry a strong wizard to raise a family with. Cho had been through so much, I honestly don't think she can handle any more heartbreak. She told me she wanted to quit the night the two of you separated."

"She did?" Harry asked, his voice catching in his throat.

"Yes, but I told her not to. I told her I'd be there for her and we'd get through her training together," Eros said softly, "I own you an apologize because it wasn't right of me to try to protect her from you. She was strong enough, but I couldn't see it. She's grieving, but once her heart has healed she's promised me a chance. It became apparent to her that we'd never get that chance if I was her mentor."

Harry swallowed hard and spoke in a bitter tone, "Well, I wish you both the best of luck."

"That means a lot to me Harry. We both want the same thing. We both want to see Cho happy. Don't we?" Eros asked.

Harry nodded, "She deserves to be happy."

"I want to ask a favor of you," Eros paused, "It won't be easy I know."

"What?" Harry asked growing slightly annoyed.

"Stay away from Cho. She won't ever be able to move on if you give her false hope," Eros said simply, "If you ever loved her, let her move on. We both know you two could never be anything more than what you were. She deserves to be safe."

"The vampires. You think they were after her because of me?" Harry asked.

Eros took a deep breath, "Speculation, that's all. But I know more about the vampires than any other Auror in the Ministry. They don't attack for no reason."

"Why did you tell Cho you thought it was just an isolated incident?" Harry demanded, "If she's in danger she needs to know."

Eros froze for a second then grinned, "You've spoken to her then?"

"Yea," Harry said shortly.

"I did tell her that. She doesn't need to panic yet. Like I said, it is only speculation," Eros defended.

"Sometime I wonder if you really do have Cho's best interest at heart," Harry accused.

Eros snapped, "I'm in love her, Harry. I want to see her succeed! Mark my word, if you do not grant me my favor, she will not complete Auror training. Master O'Riley has already been told by the higher powers that be, if Cho and you get back together, she is to be dismissed."

"Master O'Riley would have told me that."

"Would she? It isn't her place to. Cho knows, and that should be enough. Let me guess, she wouldn't even look you in the eyes?"

Harry froze recalling Cho's distant expression. He narrowed his eyes and took a deep breath, "Are we done here?"

"Of course, you need to get back to your classes. If you need anything Harry, please don't hesitate to ask," Eros said in a false polite tone, "And remember what we discussed."

Harry stormed out of the room, his heart beating with rage in his chest. If he had to endure a moment more in that room, he wouldn't need a wand to perform magic.

The week passed by quickly and uneventfully. Except for the upcoming Quidditch Cup nothing seemed interesting or out of the ordinary. Hermione hadn't spoken to Ron, nor he to her, and Harry's main concern was how he could fix the situation before the weekend.

If Hermione didn't attend Ron would never forgive himself. The World Quidditch Cup was a way for Ron to prove he was doing something with is life, even if it wasn't something Hermione approved of.

"I'm sure Ron still wants you to come with us," Harry pleaded, but Hermione simply rolled her eyes and shoved her nose deeper into the book she was reading.

"Come on Hermione, stop playing this silly game. What else are you going to do with weekend?" Harry wailed in frustration.

Hermione pointed her nose upwards, "I was planning on having a weekend with Fleur and Bill. You can tell Ron, Viktor is coming down to visit them."

"Hermione, you honestly know you don't want me to tell him that," Harry lectured.

She narrowed her eyes slamming her book shut, "If he's going to be a jealous prat, he might as well have something to be jealous about. I'm not going to stop having male friends just because he's insecure."

Harry sighed as she walked out of the room.

"Still no luck, huh mate?" Terry observed from the seat next to Hermione.

Harry shook his head, "Maybe they shouldn't be together. It would be a lot easier on me."

"True, but Ron loves her, even if he's too thick to realize it. They'll make up eventually, even if you weren't helping them along," Terry commented casually before looking over his shoulder, "Speaking of, how did your date with Bones go. I never heard."

Harry laughed lightly, "Funny you should ask that."

"Funny?" Terry asked with a curious expression.

Harry shook his head as he remember his conversation with Susan in Diagon Alley, "Remember when you said Susan was a nutter."

Terry laughed triumphantly, "I knew it!"

"Knew what?" Harry asked.

"She went crazy on you," Terry said casually.

Harry shook his head, "It's nothing like that. She isn't a nutter. Michael's right, Susan is a girl and all girls cry."

"So what's so funny?" Terry asked.

Harry grinned, "It turns out she wasn't interested in me."

"Really," Terry asked looking slightly surprised, "Then why did she agree to go out with you?"

"She was trying to help me get over Cho," Harry explained, "I told her I'd talk to you and see if you might be interested."

"Interested in who, Cho?" Terry asked nervously.

"No," Harry said impatiently, "Interested in Susan."

"SUSAN?" Terry exclaimed, "Why would I be interested in Susan."

"I dunno," Harry shrugged, "I just haven't seen you with too many girls mate, and I thought maybe you might …."

"I dated Parvati!" Terry defended, "I've had my fair share, not as many as Michael or Anthony, but I've had a few girls."

"Alright, I'll tell her you aren't interested," Harry agreed.

Terry nodded looking slightly relieved, "She really said she fancied me?"

"Yes, why would I just make something like that up?" Harry asked impatiently.

"I mean she isn't my type at all. We have absolutely nothing in common. Michael is right, she's a burly girl," Terry rambled.

"She isn't burly," Harry countered, "Just because she isn't as material as Parvati and Lavender… Hermione isn't materialistic and she isn't burly."

"Hermione is to burly," Terry argued, "She is one of those natural girls."

"Than we don't agree on our definition of burly," Harry sighed.

"Well Cho isn't burly. She's a right nice little thing to look at," Terry said quickly, "She takes care of herself."

"I've already said I'd tell her you weren't interested," Harry said growing slightly annoyed at the mention of Cho's name.

Terry nodded, "Right, not interested at all."

Noel sat by candle light in the potions lab. Her mind was reeling as she scribbled a few equations onto a piece of parchment, trying to get the exact proportion of the ingredient correct. If everything when right, her potion would have it's desired effects.

She slowly touched the quill to the tip of her head and deduced the exact amount of Essence of Murlap the potion would call for.

"Noel, what are you thinking," hissed a whispered that approached her in the dark.

Noel's head snapped up and glared at the unwelcome intruder, "What does it look like I'm doing. I'm working on some potion homework."

Susan stood firmly in her stop. The look on her face told Noel she wasn't buying her story, "Do I look that thick?"

"Do you want me to answer that question?" Noel asked bitterly, continuing with her equations.

"You're making a love potion. I saw you looking one up earlier this week, and you've been scribbling potion equations all week. I'm not stupid," Susan revealed, "what you're doing is illegal, and you could get thrown into Azkaban."

Noel tutted, "Do I look that daft, Bones. I'm not making a restricted love potion. I'm altering the ingredients. It's a temporary love potion of sorts."

"They're still restricted," Susan argued.

Noel sighed, "So, are you going to go turn me in?"

Susan looking threatening for a moment, "No, I'm not turning you in. I'm just here to make you stop and think before you do something stupid."

Noel stopped her scribbling, "This is a brilliant potion. I'm using the basic template for the Love Binding Potion and adding a time limit draft to it. It will be a temporary love potion without the common side effects. Meaning we could use it on prisoner during interrogation and find out anything we want."

"It's unethical, the Ministry would never pass it," Susan argued, "I appreciate what you're attempting, but…"

"There's more," Noel interrupted, "Maybe I'm making it for a personal reason. What would you give for a day even an hour with someone you truly care about?"

"Noel," Susan said quickly.

"This could grant that wish. I'm adding a memory charm to it so the drinker won't remember anything that happened during the potions active time," Noel explained.

Susan still didn't look convinced, "It would be a lie. Why would you want to be with someone who is only with you because of a potion?"

Noel thought quickly on her feet, "What if I add a truth serum to the ingredients. It might be a little tricky combining everything. The drinker would only act if they had true feelings for the person who casted the potion. What is unethical about that?"

"You could do that?" Susan asked looking impressed.

Noel rolled her eyes, "It's just a matter of the right ingredients in the right proportions. Simple really."

"I still don't know, what if someone catches us?" Susan asked.

Noel cringed slightly at the mention of us, "Master Wallace isn't going to question what were doing. We're doing extra research in potions."

"If you could create a potion like that, how would we know it works?" Susan asked, growing more interested.

Noel cocked her eyebrow up slightly, "We simply test it. I don't plan on using if for myself, but if you know someone you'd like to use it on for yourself."
"Potion testing on wizards is strictly forbade," Susan reminded.

"Well, this isn't exactly a legal potion study is it?" Noel retorted, "It's harmless really."

Susan smiled lightly, "So if the drinker doesn't like me, then it will have no effect?"

"Precisely, you get the object of your affection, and I get the satisfaction of knowing if I accomplished a new potion, which could be used in interrogations someday," Noel said as she began to scribble on her parchment.

Susan giggled, "I'm probably going to regret agreeing to this."

"If you're done battling your conscience than you can leave," Noel spat as she scribbled feverishly.

"Oh right, you probably need some privacy. I'll cover for you in the dormitory tonight," Susan offered, "Let me know if you need any help."

Susan gently closed the door behind her and Noel rolled her eyes, "Gullible."

Noel now had to alter her initial idea and create separate potion so Susan wouldn't suspect or turn her in. Either way it was merely a small delay in her plan. It would still work. She had to know if what she was feeling was real or merely an illusion.

The next chapter will be much more exciting. It is the one I'm excited about writing.

NEXT UPDATE: 06/13/04 I'll post if it will be a later date if my internet is up.
