Thoughts at Dawn
Hot. Unbearably hot.
He grinned, thinking of the irony, as he strode the streets.
Ten years since the last time he had set foot in Edo--no, Tokyo now, thanks to the Meiji bastards, he corrected himself-- and all he could think about was that the weather was hot. Not how the war had changed the landscape, not how he couldn't recognize the streets of his native city anymore, not that there were no traces of his house's backyard, where he used to play under the loving care of his sister. No, just how hot the weather was.
'Oh, yes, it's hot out here, Battousai,' he thought, pushing his glasses up his nose, hiding the mad glint shining in his eyes, his features hardening suddenly, the white hot fury swelling in his chest, 'but it's not nearly as hot as where I'll send you.'
Closing his eyes, he saw her there, her tender smile the only encouragement he needed.
'Soon, Tomoe, soon. I'll make him know how hot Hell is soon,' he thought, tightening his grip on the cord keeping his sword in place over his shoulder, as he walked towards his meeting with Fate.
A/N: The action is set just before the events described in Vol 19 Episode "Overture to Death" of the manga, where Kenshin meets Enishi for first time in ten years, over a bridge at dawn, and the later delivers his official "declaration of war". For those who don't know who the hell Enishi is (since the volumes about Jinchuu are just being published in the US, though the manga was finished like ten years ago, and the on line translations have been available for years ), he is Kenshin's brother in law, the younger brother of his late wife Tomoe, who died at Kenshin's hand. Enishi's goal it's to make a living Hell for Kenshin as a result of his Man-made Justice (Jinchuu), before sending him to real Hell.
