-Prologue-
Remus Lupin grimaced as he placed down his goblet. Wolfsbane potion was disgusting, but what was worse was what would follow its consumption.
Every transformation was the same. Everything, every instance- from the way the moon rose (as a reminder) to the way his skin grew pale, was the same every month when he continued the cycle of lycanthropy. Even the fear stayed.
Remus Lupin had been a monster for nearly 25 years.
Over this period, he had learned a few essential things. Things that would guide him through his exhaustion. They were simple.
Rule#1:
Never show signs of fatigue.
Whining and groaning, Remus knew, would never make his situation better. If he smiled through the excruciating pain, people wouldn't think… wouldn't consider his… irregularity…
Rule#2:
It was only for one night.
Sure, the post-symptoms and the aftermath were nearly as bad, but this thought made the time pass.
Rule #3:
Invest energy in other people's troubles, and you'll forget about yours.
This was one of those methods of coping that any felt were cowardly. This meant you weren't facing the problem- not embracing and learning from it. But his problem, he felt, was an exception. He would never embrace the moon.
Rule #4:
NEVER forget your promise.
Never.
