A story for my precious baby sister, happy birthday Beaner. Love, your big sister, Allie.
Not out of retirement. Just inspired by "Small Umbrella in the Rain" from the musical "Little Women"
Disclaimer: I own it not.
That spring had brought a downpour of rain, so everyone carried umbrellas. Guy Germaine had been locked out of his room by his roommate and his girlfriend. His roommate's girlfriend, not Guy's. Guy's love, Connie, had decided it had been time for another one of their infamous breaks about 2 weeks ago and was currently very happy with one of the baseball players at the school.
When they were together, he could fly so high. Their disagreements infamous among their friends, yet they were still incomplete without each other. And now they were apart and he was completely miserable.
His umbrella sat unopened at his feet, even though a not-so fine mist hung in the air. It wasn't enough to make him worry as he lay on a bench with his eyes closed.
"Guy…" a voice. The voice, the one that he would know anywhere, sweet and innocent, to him at least. He sat up and gave her a questioning look. "It's raining, come inside?"
"No, I'm afraid I can't do that…" he said. His eyes looked up at hers. Lined with red, you could tell she had been crying. "What did he do?" he blurted.
She shook her head, "I'll tell you, just not here."
"Or just tell me here?" He reached down and popped his umbrella open. It was small, so they huddled closely under it, her story quickly unfolding about heartbreak.
"Connie, I'm sorry…"
"Don't be. Really…"
"I have to be, I'm the one that told him I was still in love you."
"Guy, that's why he told me to go, he knew I would be happier with you."
So there they sat, even though the sun was shining brightly yet the rain was falling around them, so they huddled under their small umbrella as the rain fell. The fact they shared an umbrella was the first thing they shared on in two weeks, a kiss was the second.
