Part Three: The Aftermath

AN:I said you can review now.

"Your honor," said Richard Perez, Spencer's lawyer "my client was clearly the victim here. The fight never would have occurred if he hadn't been in the bar. I'd like to submit a defense of 'wrong place, wrong time'. Plus, I'd like to mention that he has an important business meeting in Albany the day after tomorrow, thus the reason for this quickie trial."

"Mr. Perez." said the judge. "I am aware of the urgency of your client's meeting, but the fact is that half a dozen eyewitnesses said he threw the first punch and he personally sent a man to the hospital. I'm sure his business partners will understand why he's not there. Bail is denied." He banged his gavel and ended the trial.

----------

As Spencer was marched back to his jail cell, Richard followed.

"I can't believe you did this again!" groaned Richard. "How many times has your temper gotten you into trouble?"

"I'm sorry." said Spencer. "But he was in my face."

"Do you really think I enjoyed being pulled away from my son's graduation party?" asked Richard. "Then there's your business meeting. What are you going to do?"

Spencer looked at the baliff and told Richard "I'd like to talk with you about that privately."

The baliff led Spencer to his cell and locked him in. "Okay, you two can talk." he told Richard and Spencer. "But no funny stuff." He then walked away.

"Okay, I don't think he can hear us now." said Richard. "What's the deal?"

"The deal is there is no meeting." said Spencer.

"What?" asked Richard.

"I'm not going to Albany for a business meeting." said Spencer. "That's the finish line for the Cannonball Run."

"You're taking part in the Cannonball Run?" asked Richard. "Who are you with?"

"Bob." said Spencer. "Look, you have to fill in for me. Bob's going to need a teammate."

"And you want me to do the Cannonball?" asked Richard.

"So, what do you say?" asked Spencer.

"Alright, I'll do it." said Richard. "Now, how will I know Bob?"

"He's got a red Dodge Viper." said Spencer. "One of the new ones. He's at the hotel where the fight took place."

"Wish me luck." said Richard as he left.

----------

Just down the street, Chris and Peter had taken their cars to a local dealership. Unfortunately, there was nothing that could be done.

"Unbelievable." said John. "We've got one car with a blown engine and another that's...oh, man."

"I'm really sorry." said Chris.

"I guess this is one race we don't take home." said Peter.

"What?" said Chris. "Now, hold on! This isn't some little stock car race! This is the Cannonball! We're not just some dinky little cottage company! This is Ford! Now, maybe pulling out is good for some! General Motors, for example. But we have to do this! We have to do this!"

"How?" asked Peter. "We don't have a car!"

"We're at a dealership, dingus!" said Chris. "There must be a hundred damn cars here!"

"Actually, I talked to the owner." said John. "After he found out what happened, he refused to allow us the use of any cars on the lot."

"Saleen's over in Irvine." said Chris. "We can call on him."

"Actually, Steve's at a race in Ohio." said Peter. "I'm afraid that's not gonna work."

"So, we're finished." said Chris.

"We could probably call the boys in Dearborn and ask them to sent us a car." said Peter. "Unfortunately, I don't think we have enough time."

"Actually, we do, but we have to hurry." said John.

"Really?" asked Peter.

"If I call now, we can get a car on a plane and at the starting line by race time." said John as he took out his cel phone. "Is that what you want me to do?"

"Do you need to ask?" asked Chris.

"Thought so." said John as he started dialling.

----------

Back at the hotel, Dallas sat on the bed and fiddled with a PS2 controller. Onscreen, he guided a Ferrari 360 around a Mediterranean highway. A pounding rock beat played over the action.

Speed kills, coming down the mountain.

Speed kills, coming down the street.

Speed kills with presence of mind.

Speed kills, if you know what I mean.

Just then, Dayton entered the room. "Dallas, we've got a problem." he said. "You know that bar fight tonight?"

"Yeah, what about it?" asked Dallas.

"Cali was in it and got arrested." said Dayton.

"What?" said Dallas as he turned around. In the process, he steered the Ferrari into a head-on collision with a delivery van.

"Dallas, we need you to drive the Cannonball." said Dayton.

Dallas dropped the controller and walked over to Dayton. "Now, hold on." he said. "The deal was I drive the car to the starting line and Cali drives the car in the race."

"That was the deal." said Dayton. "Unfortunately, Cali's arrest has forced us to change it."

"You always do this!" snapped Dallas. "First, you don't tell me the car is in a dealership and now you're telling me I have to drive the car in the race!"

"I'm sorry, but there's no other choice." said Dayton. "Look, we need you to drive for a simple reason: you're the only other member of the crew who can drive a stick."

"This has got to stop." said Dallas. "From now on, you're going to level with me. Got it?"

"I can do that." said Dayton.

"You will?" asked Dallas.

"If it helps with this job, I will do that." said Dayton. "Please, you're needed desperately."

"Alright." said Dallas. "I'll be in the parking lot at race time. Pippa comes too. I need her skills."

"With what?" asked Dayton.

"Whatever she does." said Dallas. "I'm not doing this alone."

"It's a deal." said Dayton. "Fine?"

"Fine." said Dallas.

----------

"Just think." said Leo. "This time tmorrow, Mark will be somewhere near St. Louis."

Beverley looked out of the window of their hotel room. "Has Mark ever raced before?" she asked. "I want to justify this operation with a victory."

"Relax." said Leo. "Mark is our best long distance driver. We have nothing to worry about."

Just then, Charlie walked in with Mark. Mark had his right arm in a cast and a black eye.

"Uh, guys." said Charlie. "Small problem."

"Mark?" said Beverley.

"What happened?" asked Leo.

"There was a bar fight downstairs." said Charlie. "Mark got in the middle of it and took a serious hit."

"Mark, can you drive?" asked Beverley.

"I don't think so." said Mark. "I can't grip anything with my right hand and I can't see squat with this eye."

"Great! Just great!" said Leo.

"We can't be!" exclaimed Beverley. "We need a new driver!"

"But the race begins at eight tomorrow." said Leo. "Where am I going to find another driver in such short time?"

"Find one or you're in big trouble." said Beverley.

"Do you have any idea how hard it is to find an appropriate driver on such short notice?" asked Leo. "We're going to need a driver who can handle a three thousand mile drive and someone who would want to do it."

Mark immediately looked at Charlie. Leo and Beverley quickly followed.

"Don't everybody talk at once." he joked.

----------

Next morning, just before the race...

"Are you sure about this?" asked Karen.

"Trust me." said Tara. "We leave half an hour before the race is supposed to start and by the time Avery finds out, we'll have a major advantage."

Tara pulled open the door to her TVR and climbed in. Unfortunately, she didn't notice Toby in the passenger seat.

"Leaving so soon?" he asked.

Tara let out a yelp, then she and Toby climbed out. Avery walked over.

"We had an agreement and you honor it like this." he said. "You know what this means. Hand them over."

He reached out his hand and Tara gave him her keys.

"You'll get these back at the start of the race." said Avery.

----------

A taxi pulled into the parking lot and stopped. Richard paid the driver and climbed out. He flipped a fedora onto his head and started looking for Bob.

----------

Team BMW prepared for the start of the race. Leo gave Charlie a walk around of a brand new white 645Ci.

"You've got yourself a three hundred, twenty-five horsepower V8 engine." said Leo. "That's mated to a six speed autonatic transmission. If that's not enough, you also got that I-Drive we've got now. That's your climate control, audio system, navigation system, and communication with BMW assist."

"Wow, this is even better than that 735i you gave me last time." said Charlie.

"Thanks." said Leo. "Listen, it's not that we don't trust you, but Beverley wants a little security for the car."

"What?" replied Charlie. "Who is she sending?"

"Herself." said Leo.

"Oh, just great." said Charlie. "That's the last thing I need. Someone criticizing my driving, telling me I'm going too fast, nagging me to stop for gas every hundred miles..."

"You could've just said 'no'." said Beverley as she walked up.

"But I didn't." said Charlie. "Come on, let me tell you about the finer points of cross-country driving."

----------

Chris and Peter stood around their empty parking space, pacing franticly.

"Where's that car?" said Peter.

"Relax." said Chris. "It'll be here."

"When?" asked Peter.

"Now." said Chris as a flatbed truck pulled up. He and Peter looked at the truck's cargo in awe. The surrounding people also took in a good look.

"Gotta hand it to John." said Peter. "He cast out his line and hooked a marlin."

"You know what?" said Chris. "That is the stuff that dreams are made of."

The two men just stared at the car for the better part of a minute. The car was not on sale yet to the general public, but John had arranged for Chris and Peter to have it.

The car was a black on yellow Ford GT.

"Nice." said Peter. "I'll go update the paperwork. You familiarize yourself with the controls."

"Got it." said Chris as he climbed up on the truck. Peter ran off to his task. On the truck, Chris looked over the crowd and said "Have you driven a Ford lately?"

----------

"Look, do you really have to go with him?" asked Leo.

"Isn't this the guy who punched you out and stole your girlfriend?" asked Beverley.

"Yes, but I had it coming." said Leo.

"I just want to make sure he doesn't steal the car." said Beverley.

"Oh, come on!" said Leo. "This is..." Leo noticed Charlie watching them and lowered his tone. "This is Charlie we're talking about. He wouldn't steal first base in a softball game. I trust him. Why can't you?"

"I don't know him." said Beverley. "Look, if this was Mark, I wouldn't have to do this. But this is your guy. This is just something I have to do."

"Okay. And I'll just be waiting for you to realize that Charlie is a good man." said Leo. "Even if that takes the entire race, I'll be waiting."

"And you'd better be right." said Beverley.

----------

Richard found Bob working under the hood of a red Dodge Viper SRT-10 and called out "Hey, Bobby!"

Bob looked up. "Oh, hi." he said. "And you are?"

"Richard Perez, I'm Spencer's lawyer." he said.

"Oh, yeah." said Bob. "I heard about his arrest."

"Well, he asked me to fill in for him." said Richard.

"Okay." said Bob. "We already arranged that I was going to drive most of the way. Spence was going to navigate and drive when I got tired."

"Alright." said Richard. "So, how's the car looking?"

"I'm almost done with the tune up." said Bob as he leaned under the hood and used his wrench on a bolt. "I just need to tighten this...and there."

Bob took his wrench out from under the Viper's hood and closed it.

"So, you wanna plan race strategy?" asked Richard.

"Nah, Spooks and I already covered that." said Bob.

"Spooks?" asked Richard.

"It's my pet name for Spencer." explained Bob.

"Heh, that's funny." said Richard. "You gave your teammate a pet name. Ususally, you only give a pet name to your girlfriend or your wife. Ah, that's just cute."

Bob watched Richard walk over to the Viper's passenger side door. "Good lord." he mumbled. "Spence sent me a straight guy."

----------

Pippa sat in the Porsche working on her laptop. Dallas walked over and dropped into the driver's seat.

"Whatcha up to?" he asked.

"Plotting our route." said Pippa. "I was just about to run a full diagnostic and I just finished clearing Cali's prior moving violations. Mate's not as clean as he makes out."

"Good to hear that." said Dallas. "What about Lo-Jack?"

"Deactivated." said Pippa. "If the cops want to find us, they're going to need a bigger magnifying glass."

"Good, very good." said Dallas.

"Dallas, can I ask you a question?" asked Pippa.

"You just did." said Dallas. "Go ahead."

"Why did you ask for me?" asked Pippa.

"Because you're the only member of this team that's not a jerk or a moron." said Dallas. "Why do you ask?"

"Because I've never been asked to work in the field." said Pippa. "This is quite an adventure for me."

"Welcome to my world." said Dallas.

----------

"Just relax." said Leo as he led Beverley to the BMW's passenger door. "Charlie didn't let me down last time. He'll do good this time."

Beverley climbed into the car while Charlie climbed out. "Leo?" he said.

"What?" replied Leo.

Charlie walked over and asked "Is something going on I should know about?"

"Nothing important." said Leo. "Just working out some trust issues."

"Like what?" asked Charlie.

"Well, Beverly has her doubts about you." said Leo. "Something to do with you punching me out last time."

"What?" replied Charlie. "Oh, come on."

"No, it's true." said Leo. "Beverley has this little deal when it comes to trust. She tends to have problems with people who have had unfortunate dealings with her co-workers."

"What did you tell her?" asked Charlie.

"Well, that was back before I developed a conscience." said Leo. "I told her basicly my side and that's all she knows."

Charlie groaned.

"Sorry, it's my fault." said Leo.

"Ah, don't worry about it." said Charlie. "Three thousand miles of triple digit speeds will open her up."

"Are you sure about that?" asked Leo.

"Worked with Tiffany." said Charlie.

AN:Anybody want to guess what video game Dallas was playing? BTW, the song lyrics do come from Bush's "The People That We Love".
