Snape ran after his fellow Deatheaters, his mind racing. He had just killed Dumbledore. Killed the most powerful wizard in the world. Second most powerful wizard in the world he corrected himself.
What would Voldemort say when he found out what he had done. Surely he wouldn't care that he had done it as long as the job was done. He had been counting on Malfoy to die in the attempt though.
He glanced at the pale blonde boy that ran beside him. All it would take was a quick curse and then everything would be right. Then he would be Voldemort's favorite again. The other Deatheaters were far enough ahead for him to get away with it.
Snape raised his wand and pointed it at Malfoy. Malfoy stopped dead in his tracks.
"Professor, what are you doing?" Malfoy asked fear in his eyes.
"I'm simply doing what has to be done, for the good of the Dark Lord. You must understand I have no other choice."
"But Professor!" Malfoy was cut off.
"Avada Ked-" Snape's body began to shake. He dropped his wand and fell to his knees. His eyes went to the sky. He was dying. His last few thoughts raced, "This can't be happening," he thought, "I only vowed to protect Malfoy as long as the mission was going on it's done now!" Then to his horror he remembered a day long, long ago.
He had entered Dumbledore's office a much younger man. He had claimed to be through with the Deatheaters for good. Dumbledore being a trusting man seemed to believe him but there was still a bit of doubt behind his eyes. Snape had been so set on getting the job to please his master that he would have agreed to anything. And he did.
He made an Unbreakable Vow to Dumbledore promising that he would always do what's best for the school. He had been lucky before that he wasn't punished for all of the times he spied on Dumbledore and the other teachers. But it seemed now that his luck had run out.
With a last deep, shaky breath he fell forward, his face to the ground and darkness came to him.
Not very far away, Harry Potter came upon the dead body of Dumbledore. He was smiling.
