Before letting him go, she knew.
Winry Rockbell was not to be mistaken by her decision for allowing her childhood friend to left and embark on his journey. She understood his reasoning to leave and restore his brother's armored body, even at the most tender of ages. She knew something ahead of time.
She knew him.
Her heart did not lie about her secret wish in hoping that he would choose to stay and live with her. Though, if she did not allow him to be free then he would be banished into misery and guilt of his sins. She would have to push him up; she was needed to be his strength whenever he was weak. So, she could not put him on a leash and not satisfy any wishes that he may have.
If I truly love him, I would allow him to part my side.
It was a selfless deed, to watch his back as he heads towards the horizon and shed tears. The same type of tears which express loneliness, sadness, and pride that she allows to flow down her cheeks for the ones she love and only the ones she love. These clear liquids are the ones that remind her of her reason and keep her head up high.
What Winry didn't know was…
"…You're not…Him…He 'died' years ago!"
"So you think I'm dead?" An amused look crept onto his face. She blushed and replied with a hint of stubbornness in her voice,
"No! I mean…I don't know! I was starting to lose hope, Ed…I was…"
Transparent fluids fell from her eyes as his arms opened for her embrace which came almost immediately.
"I'm home, Winry. I'm home."
Months or even years, Edward Elric would always come back, no matter how many times he will leave. He shall consistently restore himself to be by her side once again, however far it would be for him to walk. He would do it because he was her 'boomerang'.
He would return because she did not keep him chained.
