My hands

Disclaimer: I do not own Rurouni Kenshin

It was just after dinner, Kenshin had just finished washing the dishes. Kaoru cooked today. So in returning her kindness, he volunteered to clean up. He sure had a hard time scrubbing all the burnt food from the pots and pans, but he didn't mind. Her cooking had certainly improved. He had scrubbed off more burnt food before. Now, he was just sitting on the porch, staring out at the sky. His mind wandered to a certain woman with black hair and deep, deep blue eyes.

Kaoru had just finished taking a long hot bath. She had cooked today, and she was tired. Her food sucked as usual. She sighed, she would never ever get the cooking part right. How could he ever love her like this? She was as unwomanly as a woman could get. She stared at her hands; they were not smooth and soft like a woman's should be. Instead, it was rough, like a swordsman's. Why would he ever like that? And just look at her food. It would take a lot of love for a man to tolerate eating her poison everyday. He was just being polite, as he was 'earning his keep', as he would say. 'That baka. Can't he see how much I love him?' She thought to herself. After she got dressed, she went out to the front porch. There, she saw the love of her life.

He heard footsteps, he turned around, and saw woman he had been thinking about. He shook his head, thinking that she would never love him. Why should she? There were so many other suitors who would die to go out with her. What on earth had let him think that he actually stood a chance? He was such a moron. "Kaoru-dono how was your bath? Was it fine?" He asked her. She nodded her head. "That's good." He said again. They sat side by side together, enjoying each other's company.

They didn't talk. They didn't need to. Kaoru was thinking of how she would never be what she wanted to be for him. What she didn't know was that the man beside her was thinking of the exact same thing. He was thinking of how he was not worthy of her love. He too, did not know.

Kaoru stared sadly at her hands, thinking of how useless they were. They were only made for handling a sword, useless for cooking. She wasn't tall and elegant like Megumi. Her hair was always out of control. She stank most of the time, due to sword practice. Who would ever want to be with her? That man must be out of his mind. Of course she didn't know that the moron beside her would want to do that.

Kenshin saw Kaoru staring at her hands. Was there something on them? He looked at her face. She looked so sad. 'Why is she so sad? Maybe I should cheer her up? How to?' Kenshin thought hard.

She continued to stare at them, thinking of how pathetic she was. When suddenly, She saw a bigger hand slip into hers. She looked up and saw warm violet eyes staring back. Kenshin smiled at Kaoru. " Kaoru-dono, you know what feature I like most about you? I like your hands. They handle a sword so gracefully. Not many women can do that. I also like the way they fit into mine, when we're walking to the market. It reminds me of how I have a family now…" He squeezed her hand, and she shifted closer to him. Kaoru smiled; maybe she wasn't so bad after all.
