Going Home

Insanity Three

:T:

The door clicked open with a soft snick, unnoticed by the bustling doctors and nurses, until the handle bumped against the wall softly. Then silence fell across the hall in an overpowering wave as all turned to stare. In the doorway stood a young woman, hair brushed, clothed in a clean and unwrinkled uniform, eyes peacefully blank. Before someone uttered a word she moved fluidly from the door towards the elevator. Hastily people scrambled out of her path, still gaping with shock and unable to comprehend as to how she had gotten out of her room. The beep of the elevator arriving was the only sound as the formerly insane girl moved into it. Sure, confident steps took her from the elevator to the main doors, and those who caught sight of her froze, the same shocked look on their faces as the shadowed figure moved through the glass doors onto the street. And as she walked, people gathered, apprehension or disbelief in the many eyes, though on some faces wonder or hope bloomed. Whispers flew between the followers as the former superhero walked; none moved to stop her and she didn't slow her pace.

As is in a trance, she traveled down Main Street, hands relaxed at her sides and eyes slightly unfocused. When she reached the water of the harbor, a man ventured to reach out and touch her softly on the shoulder. Without looking, a graceful hand stretched out to grasp his own shoulder and bring him right next to her. She turned her head, eyes catching the fading light as the sun set, and looked at him. His eyes grew huge as she released him and, off balance, he stumbled backwards. Immediately the police and a team from the hospital surrounded the silent woman, their trank guns shaking as their hands did. The man she had touched threw himself in front of them, spreading his arms even as his mind reeled from the strange contact.

"She's sane! Trust me. She's more than sane." They looked at him askance, but by the time someone moved to give orders, the Titan had slowly risen above their head, eyes focused on the distant image of a Tower. Another heartbeat, and she flew swiftly towards the last reminder of the good that had once protected this city. The crowd watched silently in the darkening evening as her figure shrank.

One foot and then another landed lightly on the soil of the island. Driven by some unknown force, she walked to the doors. A hand lifted and placed itself on the sensor beside the entrance which had at one time spewed forth hopeful youths to defend the innocents. Nothing happened. Something, a last, desperate hope harbored in her soul, seemed to crumble and tears started to slip from her eyes, near silent sobs muffled by the heavy atmosphere. The will vanished from her eyes and once again the empty husk was abandoned, left open to insanity as the last vestiges of humanity gave up. The tears came faster and harder as her cries disturbed the long silence of the island.

With the agonized groan of unused gears, the doors jerked partway open, as if her tears had loosened rusty parts. Slowly, the tears trickling down her cheeks ceased to come and she rose, eyes daring to hope as she walked cautiously in.

The beacon atop the Tower flared to life for the first time in three years, and the crowd gathered on the shores cheered.

The computer screen lit the tear streaks on her face, casting an unearthly light on the sad look in her eyes even as she smiled in the dark room. "It's good to be home."
