Standing on her balcony
Was a woman of forty-five
Breathing in the summer air
Feeling lucky to be alive
For everything was going wrong
And the world was on her shoulders
She contemplated this, as wind
Picked up and made it colder

Then the sound of light footsteps
Abruptly stopped her racing mind
They belonged to that of a teenage girl
Who came and stood beside
She was the woman's daughter
And she sensed that things were bad
She could tell just by her greatest gift
What made her mother sad

So she said, "Mom, if you have the time
I'd like to tell you a story
It's merely a just tribute to
The ones who came before me
In all my many travels
I knew one thing was true
She was the one I looked upon
The bravest woman that I knew

She was young but very wise
And sometimes her life was rough
She had to see too much too soon
But this just made her tough
And she believed in freedom
She knew that it was nice
Betray her friends, she never would
But this came with a price

Now, I've seen people die before
I've heard out their last words
But no ordeal could ever compare
To the trial that was hers
I think that now I understand
Though once I was surprised
When something that you love is doomed
You can't avert your eyes

She watched as it was blown to bits
The place that was her home
They threatened her, they captured her
And still she held her own
She had to watch the man she loved
Suffer a horrible fate
She had to learn that a part of her
Was something she could hate

And she has lived on after that
And brought the evils down
Without her, I'd have never lived
In a peaceful town
So every day I look to her
To guide me in my life
To help me though the tricky times
To help me cope with strife

So," she said, "what did you think?"
Her mother smiled and said,
"It's not what I expected,
But it helped me clear my head."
The girl looked up at her mom
"She lived," she said, "it's true,
The bravest woman I have known
And Mother, she is you."
