"She told me this morning…" Draco swallowed hard before continuing. All the sad, empty faces looking up at him. "She told me that she was tired."
And he remembered suddenly, the beautiful spring day, with butterflies and flowers and all around good feeling. He remembered welcoming the day, remembered the smile on his sleeping wife's soft pink lips. And he remembered her face when he woke her up.
It was disappointment at a sudden realization.
Because she realized where she was. Asleep with Draco Malfoy in their manor, with the sun calling. And he felt a sigh rise within her.
And she told him no. No, she would not get up and greet the day. She would go back to bed and search her mind for the dream. Her face was suddenly elated as she told him.
The dream, Draco.
With everyone their, happy and together and accepting, and you and me and my brothers and our friends…
And he scowled and told her that dreams were lies.
She said she thought lies were preferable to the truth that is life. She said she wanted to sleep forever.
And then he said no. No, she could not sleep the day away. She was to get up and go to the graveyard, as they always did. They went for her, but he knew she'd regret not going if he didn't force her to.
And because she loved him, she agreed.
"So we visited my Arthur and Molly's graves, because that was what we did on April 30th, every year. April 30th, our wedding anniversary." Draco continued, stumbling over his words.
She had stumbled, too.
Clumsily moved down the streets in a careless outfit with unmade hair in the glare of the sun. He had walked ahead of her, not one step wasted.
He turned only when he felt her crying.
But she told him they weren't tears, just the sun burning her eyes.
And he believed her because it didn't sound like crying. Just rain leaking out of the creases of her squinting eyes. After all, it was a bright day, he told himself as he walked on.
"She only cried when she was alone. And since she married me, she never was. Only… you never came back. Her parents, her brothers, her friends. You disowned her because you hated me. And her wedding, and her life following that, was bleak. And I couldn't save her from all the pain…"
But he stopped again when she whined that she was tired. And he froze because he knew what she meant.
She was tired of being excluded from the life she used to know.
"She missed you." Draco whispered to the speechless crowd. "Marrying me meant that you would leave her, but she did so anyway. She loved me, but she missed you."I miss her smile, he thought sullenly, walking ahead of her again and crossing the street. The light was red, but the cars revved at attention, waiting to race to wherever they were going.
The cars began to move.
And she stopped.
He begged her to move. She merely smiled. They say she was frozen with fear. It wasn't fear. People don't smile when they're afraid.
She smiled at him.
I'm going to sleep, Draco. To dream forever.
"So here it is. You came to Ginny's funeral because you felt pity. How sad, you thought, that she was in an accident. It was not accident. The driver didn't assume responsibility, and I didn't blame him. It wasn't his fault that she didn't move." Draco paused, maliciously.
"It was yours."
I don't own Harry Potter or any affiliates. The only I own is the plot. I don't even know if I want it. It's a little weird… Oh well, be kind and rewind! And review!
