Hello. Thanks very much for clicking on this little vignette.
This was, predictably enough, inspired by all the rain we've been getting in my area of the country lately. I got to thinking about how a certain farm boy would have reacted to seeing rain the first time (and concluded that that was very predictable) and wondered if it would still have the same effect on him years later.
The result is this short drabble. Reviews, criticism, and suggestions are all welcome.
And for those few following my other story Namesake, I haven't abandoned it so don't worry—I've just hit a touch of writer's block combined with work. Ugh.
On with the show!
Disclaimer: George Lucas owns this character and universe. I wish I owned an entire universe…
It's funny really, how much rain amuses him, even after all these years.
As a renowned and respected Jedi Master, you'd think a few sprinkles from the atmosphere would hardly be worth a moment's notice. After all, there are other things to attend to, the things any man is occupied with. Friends, a family, future Jedi Knights to train, a galaxy to save…
Well, maybe not things any man would be troubled with.
But regardless, there are a number of things that could capture his attention, and if one had to guess, rain probably wouldn't be one of them.
But Luke Skywalker has always been an odd one.
If you asked him why he considered rain watching to be a valuable endeavor, he would probably reply calmly and quietly that it is a soothing, viable demonstration of how life grows. And life is part of the Force, and for a Jedi—that is everything.
But some people know better.
Some people know that Master Skywalker was not always the collected leader he is today. He didn't always go around wielding his green lightsaber, blazing like a comet through the Force, raw, pure, focused energy blinding those around him—and saving thousands of lives, innocent or not.
Some people know—and even fewer remember—that there was a time when the formidable hero was simply known as "Luke", a bright blue eyed farm boy, whose biggest claim to fame was his run through Beggar's Canyon in his T-16 skyhopper on the desert planet of Tatooine.
And even fewer realize that as Master Skywalker watches the rain, feels it wash over him when he reaches out to touch it, he revisits his past, and becomes just "Luke" again, becoming just a moisture farmer, awed and befuddled by so much moisture available—just like that.
But for those who knew, and know now, watching the Jedi Master watch the rain fall is one of the most satisfying sights ever. For it reminds the watcher of pure and simple innocent joys, the feel of the drops upon their skin, the cooling mist it sometimes brings. And it gratifies the watcher to know, that even legends—even Jedi—are human too.
And though many will never know why, Jedi Master Luke Skywalker finds peace, solitude, and enjoyment in watching the rain fall.
