Eternity

He pushed the door to the bathroom open with his foot, not wanting to spill any of the deep purple liquid in the wine goblets on the white tiles of their bathroom floor.

He was happy to see her sitting in the bath tub, he didn't expect her to be lying in it, although he wished she would grant herself a bit of relaxation time. He had let the hot water run before he left to do some last minute grocery shopping. He knew it was safe to let the water running as they had an agreement that she wouldn't put in any overtime. It hadn't exactly been an agreement as he had practically blackmailed her. He had told her he would come and drag her away from a case file, interrogation, DNA analysis or whatever she was working on if she would be one minute too late. He knew she dreaded being called unprofessional so she agreed, but he did spent two days sleeping on the couch before she started to see his request did make sense, somewhat.

He wasn't sure she had heard him come in since she was still holding her legs close against her body, keeping her head turned down, her long wavy and wet hair blocking her view, she was humming some song sounding faintly familiar to him. He put down one of the wine goblets and reached out to brush her hair away so he could look at her properly. Her hair was much longer now than when he first met her. She had let it grow just because he liked it long. Her reaction to his actions told him she had indeed felt his presence. His hand continued its path tracing her jaw line and stroking her cheek. She leaned against his hand and put her hand on top of his.

After spending a couple of minutes in comfortable silence, she told him she had already started boiling the pasta. It would be no use telling her he didn't forget he would cook dinner tonight. That he just simply forgot to buy the fancy Italian cheese she liked so much and ran to the grocery store to buy it. He knew telling her that would embarrass her. She was trying so hard to let him take care of them and he knew it was difficult for her to give up control over the simplest of things. She would rather do it herself. That way she knew it would get done. He decided not to comment on it right now. He was sure there would be ample opportunity to get into this later on, unfortunately.

He handed her the wine goblet, which caused her to look up at him raising one eye brow in confusion shaking her head slowly. He told her it was just grape juice. Seeing the flash of relief crossing her beautiful face made him regret using the wine goblets. He should have realized. Unable to change it, he quietly started massaging her shoulders, gently pushing her backwards into a lying position. He wondered why she denied herself the better things of life as if she was trying to punish herself by doing that. She was an enigma, a puzzle, he didn't even try to solve.

She softly told him it was yet another seven months and he continued the game they had played on numerous occasions telling her 28 weeks. She continued on until they reached the amount of seconds going into seven months. Later that night when they lay in bed and he could hear her breathing evening out, he played the game by himself starting with an eternity and ending with an uncountable number of seconds going into the time they would spend together.
