The Happy Ending They Should Have Had
Petals drift through the caressing beams of sunlight to land on Meg's head, the pinks blending perfectly with each other. Meg breathes deeply, savouring the warm smell of spring as she walks through the DDS compound, a sheaf of documents in her hands.
Meg enters the main building, heading towards the principal's office. In the corridors, she passes Nanami, Hongou, and Cerberus, who are in the middle of a heated discussion. Unsurprisingly, Nanami and Hongou start arguing violently, and Cerberus moves to break them up. His eyes come into contact with Meg's. Cerberus grins wryly at her and shakes his head as if to say 'Those two idiots…' Meg returns the grin with a slight giggle. Then she rounds a corner, and her teachers are gone from her sight.
After a while, Meg reaches the principal's office. Before she can knock, the door opens. Katagiri and Yurie walk out, conversing in low murmurs. Yurie is too absorbed to notice that she has accidentally left the door ajar.
Meg sees Mr. Dan sitting in his wheelchair behind his desk. There is a mountainous stack of paperwork before him. Hades is in the opposite chair, writing on some documents. When Mr. Dan lets out a tired sigh, he looks up and says something softly, concern etched on his face. Meg watches as Hades walks over to Mr. Dan and starts to gently massage his neck and shoulders. Mr. Dan relaxes, smiling contentedly. They gaze at each other, their eyes full of quiet affection.
Meg steps back from the door, unwilling to disturb this peaceful moment. The report can wait. Wistfully, Meg wishes that she has someone who loves her as much as Mr. Dan and Hades love each other. She turns and walks back in the direction she came from.
Through the windows, Meg notices Kyuu and Ryuu sitting together on the bench. They are chatting away merrily. In his exuberance, Kyuu gives Ryuu a spontaneous hug. Ryuu blushes and after a tentative pause, hugs back. The afternoon sun shines on them, their two shadows melting into one. A small distance away, Kinta is squinting at the laptop as Kazuma explains something to him. The older boy scratches his head in confusion. Kazuma laughs, not unpleasantly though, and repeats what he has just said. With a growl, Kinta gives up on understanding the topic and sweeps Kazuma up into his strong arms, laptop and all. Kazuma squeaks a half-hearted protest as Kinta stomps off, muttering something about computers, whiz-kids, and ice cream.
Meg walks on, highly amused by what she has seen. A burst of sunshine greets her as she exits the building. Sakurako is standing before her, a look of pleasant surprise on her face.
"Meg!" Sakurako exclaims. "I've just finished another chapter of my book. Would you like to go to my house and read it?" She smiles invitingly.
"Of… of course! I'd love to," Meg replies, feeling a glow of warmth.
"Great!" Sakurako excitedly grasps her hand in a seemingly innocent gesture. Just then, a pink petal does a graceful pirouette onto Meg's ponytail. Sakurako reaches out to brush it away, her hand lingering for a moment.
"Those pink petals are so pretty…" Sakurako says with a slight smile. "Just like you."
Meg's cheeks turn as pink as her hair.
The sun is shining, the birds are singing, the petals are dancing with the wind, Ryuu and Kyuu are kissing behind the bushes… Meg beams happily as she walks out of the school, holding Sakurako's hand. It is such a perfect day.
