"Rain"

A gibbous moon shone pale beams of sheer light, gently wafting down and bathing the silence. Few clouds hung in the air, and the stars gleamed ever slightly from afar. The slightest wind flowed off from the pond, caressing the land. Grasshoppers chirped from among the cattails and bulrushes, and pipits shrilled high in their treetops. Meager and sparing droplets fell, hardly disturbing the serenity of Nature's domain. Soft and gentle, the skies remained. Everything else was silent and awash in the pale moonlight. Save for the slight pop and hiss from a dying fire, its embers still dancing merrily and throwing heat and light upon its visitors.

There were two figures, close and silent, perched on a log stripped of its rough bark. Long ago it had been hewn from Nature, its purpose to serve others as a resting spot.

Two pairs of depths shone in the firelight, coffee and crimson staring peacefully into the deep night as soft droplets hissed and evaporated on the still-hot rocks surrounding the fire. The smaller figure contemplated this.

"Kai…"

The other did not look up, absorbed in colouring the rocks with soot from a wooden lathe. But he leaned close, re-assuring the youth. "Yes Rei?"

Rei's eyes turned to face him briefly, and then returned to their scrutiny of the rocks. "You see those rain drops on the rocks; see how they evaporate so quickly? Is that like what I am to you, just a small infinitesimal drop, meaning nothing? I mean, just enjoying the comfort of the fire, then evaporating because it has outworn its welcome?" His somber face turned yet again to his companion, awaiting an answer.

Having coloured the last of the rock while listening intently, Kai calmly tossed the stick into the flames. He then turned to face Rei.

"Listen to me Rei. You are not the water of the Earth. The opposing forces would not mix. You are the Earth, providing the fuel that fire needs. You keep the fire alight and alive; comfort it, comfort me. Never think that love can just evaporate after a single touch." He took the tan hands and clasped them tightly in his own. "Earth and fire need each other to survive, like us, alright? I want you to remember that."

Understanding, Rei gave a loving smile and nodded, his raven waves gently framing his face. He scooted closer to his love and rested his head upon the other's strong shoulder and embraced him.

"Then you know that I'll always love you, Kai."
