"Firenze?"
The name came as a whisper, a statement becoming a question at the last possible moment.
"You should not have come here." Came the simple reply.
It was an unnecessary statement. She knew she didn't belong there. And yet still she had come. Perhaps the correct response would have been 'why?' but Firenze did not ask.
She came up alongside the creature that stood before her. The centaur, half man, half horse. He was beautiful, his eyes like sapphires, holding the secrets of the universe. But he did not smile. Neither did she.
She tilted her head heavenward and spent a moment in silence, gazing at the stars.
"What do they say?" She asked quietly.
The seemingly broad question in truth had a much narrower scope, and Firenze seemed to find the true meaning that she had hidden underneath.
"We are too small." He answered. "The planets say nothing about us."
She nodded, unsurprised. She had known the answer before the question was asked. Yet she had asked it anyway. Such was her nature. She couldn't help it. Like she couldn't help her feelings.
She shivered in the late fall breeze, and Firenze's arm automatically wrapped itself around her shoulders.
They stood that way for some time. Not speaking. Just being together, taking comfort in each other's warmth.
"Centaurs can only read what the stars have to tell us." He said finally. "We can not change their courses any more than humans can."
His arm left her shoulder and she was suddenly cold again. Suddenly alone.
"I know." She said softly.
She gazed at him one last time. They were so different. Too different, she with her two legs and he on four. But when their eyes met, the sadness was like a mirror between them.
No, they couldn't change the stars.

Short and sweet. Or rather sad, actually. But, please review!
