ALONE
-
Minh T. would occasionally take the time to look at herself in a mirror before bedtime, and inquire to her friends in very a sweet voice, "Who am I, Flowers?" Her brown hair would have fallen in curled clumps about her face, unconstrained for the night from the colored bonnet that had stayed tied and nestled beneath her chin. Her cheeks would be glowing, and healthy, with a touch of pinkness that, the flowers would often say, looked very much indeed like the sun had kissed her. Also, every night that she would ask this, they would coo and say, "You are our mother, of course!" and there it would end.
She would then replace the mirror onto the bedside table, (among garden magazines, bits of tissue, and a delicate porcelain lamp), take small sips of herbal tea, then slide between soft sheets and close her eyes. Often though, she would not sleep, but lay awake in the still silence, pondering over her life.
Surely, she must be a very selfish mushroom, because even on the brightest day she would often feel alone, and void of a certain something that she did not receive from her dear friends. Minh T. would feel guilty for realizing this, and she would pray very hard that the strange feeling would disappear. Then, amid the lonely blankets in her very lonely bed, she would roll over and force herself to remember all the happiness that she had been blessed with in her life.
