Chapter 2

Danielle walked around in the underground lair, uncertain of what she was doing. She did not know what day it was, or how long she had been in Erik's home. A pain had filled her heart as she began to remember what had happened to her before he had found her. Erik was not there to help her soothe this now constant ache.

"I will be back within an hour or two," he had told her before he left. "We need food, and you need something more than old costumes to wear. I am also going to look into some personal matters. I will come back to you." He had correctly guessed the sudden anxious look on Danielle's face. He'd smiled at her reassuringly, and then left her in the labyrinth of dark.

The home seemed dark and sinister without Erik in it. Memories of her mother haunted her. She could hear her mother screaming for Danielle to get out of the Opera house, and her papa stating his wish that Danielle and her mother not go to attend the opera that night. Tears crept to her eyes, and she let them slowly pour down her face.

All she could do was wait for Erik, and wish that this ache would go away.

Erik moved swiftly through the darkened streets of Paris. He had a few items of food, and a number of fine women's clothing. He was now on his way to a local stable. Handing the stable's manager a few francs, he picked out the finest horse there. He immediately took off for his next destination…the house of De Chagny.
