1"What the hell d'you think you're doing?" Sawyer fumed at a skinny little man whom he had just found rummaging through the suitcase outside of his tent.
"N-nothing!" the man stammered "Just wondered, who it belonged to." he scuttled away quickly, obviously not keen on getting beaten up.
Kate smiled and shook her head as she watched from a safe distance. For a guy as bad-tempered and cocky as Sawyer was, he was still undeniably attractive.
He looked over and gave an exasperated gesture.
Kate grinned at him and shrugged. Obnoxious as he could be, she couldn't help but like the guy. But then again maybe that was part of his charm.
Of course then there was Jack. Caring, sensitive, and also good-looking Jack. He had been the first person to talk to her here on the island, but for that matter he hadn't had much of a chocie considering the nasty wound she'd had to sew up for him.
I guess when you give someone stitches you get kind of attached to them. she thought. They have to trust you, befriend you.
But was that really all there was to Jack and her? Friends? They cared about each other, that was for sure, but in what way?
Kate shook the question off, it wasn't something she wanted to think too hard about.
"Hey, Kate, what's the matter?" Charlie asked, coming over and plunking down next to her on the sand.
"Nothing," she said lamely. "Really." She tried to make this sound genuine, but it came out sounding a little miserable.
"Oh," Charlie nodded, "So you're sitting out here staring into space and looking sad for no reason, huh?"
Kate raised an eyebrow. "I don't look sad." she said defensively.
"Oh, sorry," he replied, "you're looking...serious and...reflective?"
"Charlie," she warned him, "Serious and reflective?"
"Well sad is how I would describe it if I hadn't been previously deterred from using that particular word."
"I'm not sad!" Kate protested, exasperated, but amused nonetheless.
"Well, you could tell me what's bothering you," Charlie suggested, "then you wouldn't be sad."
"Charlie, I am not sad!"
He opened his mouth in protest.
"Shut up!" Kate laughed, shoving his shoulder.
Charlie closed his mouth and smiled, satisfied. "You're not sad now."
Kate got up, still grinning. "Never was."
Charlie also stood, handing Kate's backpack to her. "Course not!"
He turned to walk away as she hoisted her bag to her shoulder.
"Hey, Charlie." Kate called to him.
Charlie stopped and turned back to face her. "Yeah?"
"Thanks."
Charlie grinned. "For what?"
