The Chan of Ban
Get Backers
--
--
The very first time Ginji had eagerly placed a 'chan' after Ban's name, Ban's eye had twitched. His whole body had tensed with the foreign suffix, and he'd angrily glared at the smiling blonde. Ban explained how he should call him Ban, or if he insisted on placing something after his name, it should be something more appropriate like 'sama', for taking him out of the fortress and all. Ginji had tilted his head to the side and laughed:
"Oh, Ban-chan…"
The second time was in the Honky Tonk, in front of Paul, who lowered the paper to stare, and Ban could see a red-orange brow rise over his right spectacle. Ban then proceeded to yell and slap at Ginji as he scolded, at the same time warning Paul what would happen to him if he said anything.
The third time Ginji had said it, it was on a recovery mission, during a confrontation with a no good gang in a dark ally. They had the gang cornered, shivering in their boots from their run-in with the jagan. Shaking, until Ginji opened his mouth.
Ban couldn't fully remember what Ginji had said, but he could recall the 'Ban-chan' clear as day, along with the sniggers of the punks in front of them.
While beating the group senseless, (they were stubborn suckers, they were) Ban made sure to 'accidentally' give Ginji a few whoppings as well.
The fourth time was in the car. Ginji had whispered it while shaking Ban awake from a nightmare. It was the first time Ban didn't feel angry. Instead he felt calm, and thankful and simply… good. He may have even muttered a thanks but he couldn't remember.
The fifth time Ginji had said Ban-chan, Ban had given up. Hell, he was used to it at this point, and by now it was a habit for Ginji to call him that, and Ban knew habits were hard to break.
He thought this as he pulled out a cigarette.
And who was he to tell Ginji what suffix to put there, when all the blond was doing was expressing his affection and relationship with him, in his. In his own way.
After all, it was one of the ways Ginji unconsciously reminded Ban of the 'S' in Get Backers. Reminded him how he wasn't alone.
Ban grinned with his smoke between his teeth as he looked over at the sleeping Ginji, who shifted, lips slightly open as he whispered things in his slumber.
"Ban-chan…"
Besides, Ban-chan had kind've a nice ring to it.
