Wishing Bell

disclaimer: this is tame. i don't own Doumeki-kun and Watanuki-kun, but you already knew that.

Little Doumeki Shizuka, age ten, walked slowly up the steps to the Doumeki family shrine. Once at the top of the stairs, he heard a terrified gasp. He turned to see his mother with a stricken look rushing towards him. "Shizuka! What in the world happened to you? Were you in a fight?" Upon her son's face was a beautiful purple-blue bruise over his eye and a bloodied and busted lip.

"I'm fine mother, you don't have to worry," the young boy said in a small voice. From behind his mother, Shizuka's grandfather emerged wearing the same worried expression. "Did an older boy do this to you, Shizuka," his grandfather asked. "No, a boy in my class. It's nothing really." As his mother continued to fuss over his wounds, his grandfather looked him over. He seemed fine, not at all bothered by the injuries. In fact, he seemed kind of happy, if not a bit guilty for worrying his family.

"Daughter, leave us be. I'll have a talk with him." She left reluctantly. Shizuka's grandfather took him by the hand and led him to the main building of the shrine. They sat facing the area where visitors of the shrine go to make wishes and leave prayers. "So, who exactly did this?" "A boy in my class named Watanuki Kimihiro." "I see, is he bigger than you are?" grandfather asked softly.

"No, he's smaller. He has blue eyes and black hair and wears glasses. He had a sour expression on his face right before he attacked me. Today was the first time we met," the young boy said eagerly. "You seem to remember a lot about him seeing as how you two just met." Shizuka looked up to his grandfather with a child-like innocence, "I was starring at him. I liked looking at Kimihiro-kun."

His grandfather smiled down at the boy. That explained a lot. He looked across from where he and his grandson sat. He saw a teenage girl bending her head in prayer and then ringing the large shrine bell so the gods could hear her wish. He looked back down at Shizuka and smiled gently, "You know, Shizuka-kun, I think you and this Watanuki Kimihiro should become good friends."

The boy's usually calm face lit up and he nodded intensely. "Yes, grandfather." His grandfather stood, "Come, you should wish for his friendship." The boy ran across to the bell. He stood perfectly still and clasped his hands together in prayer, "Please," he said aloud so his grandfather would know the desires of his heart, "let me become a good a loyal friend to Watanuki Kimihiro. This is what I want more than anything. I promise I will try my hardest."

Doumeki Shizuka rang the bell and set his wish to the gods.

Years later, Doumeki Shizuka stood holding out Himawari-chan's ribbon in the middle of bright red flowers. Watanuki would be okay. He'd wait all night if he had to. Suddenly, he thought back to the wish he had made all those years ago. He gripped the ribbon harder.

Then, there he was. As Doumeki Shizuka looked down at the calm, half lidded face of Watanuki Kimihiro, he smiled and wondered if all those years ago, did his younger self realize that when he wished to be this boy's true and sincere friend, he was really promising to always love him.
