It was the worst news he had ever gotten in his life. He felt like he did after Stacy; empty. He twirled his cane around, staring into a spot in space.
He couldn't just let Cameron resign. And he felt like the biggest ass for not shaking her hand. She was protecting herself. But from what? Him?
She liked him. She…admitted it to him.
And he liked her.
Dr. Gregory House stopped twirling his cane around and snapped out of his reverie. He liked Cameron. And it wasn't the liking her as a friend like. It was the other kind of like.
House began to tap the bottom of his cane against the floor. Think, damn it. There's gotta be a way to get her back.
Suddenly, the tapping stopped. House grabbed his Vicodin and popped two pills before hobbling out of his place.
Cameron had been staring at a certain spot on her couch for the past hour. Had she made the right decision? Of course she did. It was the best for everyone. To end the ongoing debate in her head, Allison nodded her head once and stood up to find something to eat.
Someone had other plans.
Cameron couldn't help but look annoyed as she opened to door to stop the constant knocking.
"What are you protecting yourself from?" House asked as he walked into her place.
Cameron stood there for a minute, soaking in what had just happened. It took everything for her not to slam the door shut. "What?"
"What are you protecting yourself from?" The misanthropic doctor repeated, keeping his blue eyes on Cameron.
"I…I…I don't understand your question." She stuttered, looking away from his deep gaze.
"I've heard less bull come out of Vogler's mouth." House took a few wobbly steps toward the red-headed doctor. "Just tell me and maybe I'll accept your resignation."
"You don't have a choice. I'm quitting either way." Allison replied, crossing her arms over her chest and narrowing her eyes slightly.
"You said you were protecting yourself. What are you protecting yourself from?" House reiterated.
Cameron didn't reply. She simply stayed silent, looking directly into House's eyes.
"You are stubborn." House muttered, turning his back toward her. "Alright, tell me what the other way is."
"Other way to what?"
He turned back to her. "The other way you deal with things."
"You." She said softly, looking toward the floor.
"Me? The other way you deal with things is me?" House asked, confused at her answer.
"What I'm protecting myself from. It's you."
House's lips twitched into a small smile. "Now that wasn't so hard, was it?"
