Prologue- Idea

"Is this seat taken?"

Hoshi looked up at the voice. "No." She said glumly, going back to her brooding.

Trip studied her for a few seconds before sitting down. "What's up Hosh'?"

Hoshi glanced at the Commander. Why couldn't she be in love with him? Just about all the other women on the crew were. He was one of the best-looking men on the ship, with an intelligent mind, a sense of humour and a number of other good qualities, such as being caring and friendly, and honourable. But no. She had to fall in love with a cynical British man who seemed to have no time for her. She sighed and buried her face in her hands.

"Hoshi?" Trip asked again.

"I'm sorry, Commander, it's just- have you ever been in a situation with unrequited love?" Hoshi didn't think he would have been. After all, Trip was so easy to love.

"Yeah. Kinda, anyway. I think she loves me, but refuses to say it or acknowledge it. Hell, maybe she doesn't know it herself."

"You're speaking in the present tense? Hoshi asked. Trip nodded. "Me too. Only I'm not sure if Mal…" Hoshi gulped.

"Malcolm, huh?" Trip looked thoughtful.

"Don't tell him."

"Don't worry. I have an idea!"

Hoshi looked at Trip warily. His eyes had gotten that brightness he normally got just before he did something crazy, like that time he had got it in himself to create a flag to put claim on an asteroid with, made from Lieutenant Harris's clarinet with a pair of the Captain's underwear attached.

"How about we go out? To make them jealous." Trip proposed.

Hoshi was doubtful. "Will it work?"

"It should. Malcolm will start noticing you more and realising he likes you; and I know for a fact T'Pol can't stand it when I'm with another woman."

Hoshi dropped the loaded fork she had just lifted to her mouth, and stared in shock. "T'Pol?"

Trip pulled a face while wiping the spaghetti sauce from the table and Hoshi's arm where it had splashed. "Don' ask. Will you do it?"

Hoshi smiled slowly. You know, I think I will."

A/N- do you like it? It's the start of another story that was given to me as a challenge. I'm sorry if it annoys you that I'm writing new things and not updating on previous fics- but I am writing on them, I'm just a little stuck, so I thought I'd give this one a shot as I have ideas about it. That and your reviews- (please review!)- may give me tips that'll stop my writer's block.

The trouble isn't that I'm running out of ideas for things to happen- it's just that I'm one of those people who'd write something and skip a day, just because I want to get to a good part, so then I have to force myself to fill bits in!

Anyway. I hope you're looking forward to more, I know I'm looking forward to your reviews.
