Instantaneously, his departing words sink in. He is telling her to let go, to give him up. He may not have said that exactly, but she knew what he had meant. Countless times she has watched him go. Leaving her to rejoin the war that had brought them together, and yet constantly kept them apart. This was the first time, however, that he did not promise to come back.
"I'll protect you."
Once upon a time ago he had promised to stay by her side. The princess' red knight. He left his homeland to live as a bodyguard in hers. Perhaps it was selfish to make him keep that promise. Even when he gave her that ring before departing once again. Even when the princess agreed to marry a man she did not love. She had eagerly hoped he would continue to stay by her side.
Was it too much to ask for? She wondered with wide amber eyes that were ready to shed tears at any moment. He was long gone by now, but she had watched him leave in his red mobile suit until it was no longer in sight. The sun was setting and she could hear her twin urging that it was time to return to the Archangel. Unconsciously, she nodded in agreement but did not move.
The gem on her finger has lost it's luster. Just like the promise in it. The princess wishes her knight never gave the ring to her in the first place. If only to save his heart the trouble, and her's the breaking.
