Twinkling lights lined the banister. Waiters dressed in all white serving expensive champagne in crystal flutes with gold stems. Each Mikaelson ball was never anything short of exquisite.

He was on the stairs, leaning against the banister watching the dull townspeople, listening to their equally dull conversations. He couldn't understand why anyone would choose to settle into this small waste of a town. Now that he had been un-daggered, he had plans to get far away from this town and his family the first chance he gets.

That's when he saw her. The sight of her took the air right out of his lungs.

In walked the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. She looked radiant in her backless floor length midnight blue and silver ballgown with a low-cut neckline, sparkling under the chandelier. Her waist-length dark hair, loosely curled, hanging down her back.

Her big beautiful, chocolate brown doe-eyes caught his gaze. He felt electricity through the room and radiating through his body. They locked eyes for a few moments, and he swore it was like she could see into his cold dead soul. But seeing the fire in her eyes, made him feel less cold and dead. He felt her warmth.

He forced himself to look away. 'I am Kol Mikaelson. The deadliest original. The most feared. I can't be having these thoughts of a human' he thought to himself. He could not feel, hadn't felt emotions in over a thousand years. And for her, a bloody doppelgänger no less. He knows the heartache that the original doppelgänger had caused his older brothers. Tatia was a manipulative whore who toyed with his brothers and pitted them against each other. It's no wonder Mother killed her for the vampire spell and the spell to bind his brother's werewolf side. She had it coming. He fortunately had never had the displeasure of meeting Katerina. She sounds worse than Tatia. More manipulative, more selfish. No, these Petrova women were nothing but catastrophic. Destroying everything they touch.

But, he thought, she would be the perfect way to get back at Nik for daggering for a century. Again. Yes, his plans for revenge will involve the doppelganger. Maybe he will seduce her, or maybe he will just turn her and ruin his brothers plans for hybrid world domination.

Pulling himself from his thoughts, his gazed slowly moved to the two men hanging off both her arms. A tall slender man with jet black hair and icy blue eyes. He had a look of anger and possession as he gripped her arm to keep her close. The other looked younger with his blonde hair. He was hard to read as he seemed to have no emotions in his face. They must be the annoying Salvatore brothers Klaus keeps groaning about. They certainly don't look like much. How big of a problem can they really be?

He watched intently as she tried to step around them from the entrance to the edge of the crowd, he listened as they told her to leave. She refused and shot some witty insults to the younger Salvatore. 'She has quite the sharp little tongue' he thought to himself as he watched her finally push through them and approach the bar.

This was his opening. With her bodyguards absent from her side, he started to make his way across the room. He had gotten within in feet of her before an all too familiar face approached her first. "Elijah..." he growled under his breath. Of course, his older brother would flock to the doppelganger. That face was his brothers Achilles heel. He would have his moment with her he swore to himself. He grabbed some nameless blonde and followed his brother to the dance floor. He would make sure that she ended up in his arms before this dance was over.

He was trying to listen to Elena and Elijah's conversation as they looked quite cozy. "Elena, you look absolutely breathtaking tonight." Elijah cooed in her ear, causing Elena to blush and turn away. Kol just rolled his eyes. Could his brother be any more transparent?

"So, Elena, I understand my mother wishes to see you" Elijah said in a hushed tone. This peaked Kol's interest. Why would his mother want to see Elena?

Elena looks around them "Yes. Why are you worried?" She responded.

"I do not trust my mother and her talks of forgiveness and family. She is making me ask questions I never thought I would ask." Elena froze as Elijah talked. Kol was now very interested in their conversation, but judging by Elijahs words and Elenas body language, he guessed that his mother was up to something wicked.

"Can I trust you to tell me what my mother says?" Elijah asked, his eyes silently pleading with her. "Of course, I give you my word." She gives him a small smile before Elijah twirls her and she finds herself in the arms of her next partner.

And just as Kol had hoped, when the partners changed, he found her in his arms. She was even more beautiful up close, and her scent was utterly intoxicating. He smiled down at her as he took her waist with one hand and her hand in the other. He felt a shock run through his body as they touched. 'What the hell was that' he thought to himself, wondering if she felt it too.

"Hello Darling Elena." he purred in her ear "I'm Kol Mikaelson."

"So, you're the youngest brother?" She raised an eyebrow, then realized who exactly he was. Her heart started pounding against her chest. He just smirked.

"Judging by your racing heart, I'm guessing one of my siblings warned you about me." He laughed. "Don't worry darling, I've been warned to be on my best behavior tonight." She just stared at their feet nervously, not daring to look into his eyes.

"So, darling, what does my mother wish to speak to you about? I heard you and Elijah talking" he told her.

"You were eavesdropping?" she asked incredulously. "I'll tell you what I told Elijah. I don't know why she wants to meet me. I got a note with my ball invitation and here i am. I promised Elijah, I would tell him everything." she said as they stopped dancing with the end of the song approaching.

"Kol, I need a favor." She asked quietly, nervous to speak to him still.

Anything for you darling" he whispered in her ear. Still holding her waist.

"I need you to distract my bodyguards so I can get to your mother" she said, finally looking into his eyes.

"Consider it done." He flashed a devilish smirk. He kissed her hand and let her go, watching her every move as she made her way up the stairs to his mother's den. Once she was out of sight, he sought out the two brothers. He would get 'creative' to distract those pesky Salvatores. He was itching to have some fun and they were perfect targets.
