The Pain of Future Wrongs – Chapter 3

It took some time for Phoebe to recover from the shock of her premonition. Steadying herself, she began her slow trek back to the manor. As she left P3, she decided to take a longer route home, needing some time to clear her head. As she drove by the park, she caught sight of Chris. He couldn't see her as he was leaning over the railings, gazing towards the waterfront. Phoebe quickly parked the car and ran towards Chris.

"Chris..." she called out, hoping that he won't orb away.

"Why are you following me, Aunt Phoebe?" he asked without turning to face her.

"We never finished our conversation."

"There's nothing else to say."

"Was...uh...was Piper always mean to you?" Phoebe asked timidly, not knowing if asking the question was a good idea.

Chris visibly stiffened at hearing the question. He clenched his jaws and he tightened his fist around the railing. "I don't want to talk about it," he said sharply, surprising Phoebe by the anger in his voice. Sighing, he finally turned to face his aunt. "I'm sorry, Aunt Phoebe. I shouldn't have snapped at you."

"I just want to know what happened so that we can help make things right again."

Chris shook his head sadly at the suggestion. "Just let it go, okay? I don't want to talk about it anymore. Please," he pleaded.

Phoebe decided to let it go for now, but she was in no way giving up on this issue. There was no way she was going to stand idly by while her sister and her nephew suffered. But knowing there was little that she could do now, Phoebe decided to wait until she could confer with Paige on the next steps. She pulled Chris into big hug. Sometimes she still couldn't believe that her nephew was a grown-up adult already.

"Thanks Aunt Phoebe," he said softly. As Phoebe headed back towards her car, she was interrupted by her nephew's call to her. "Aunt Phoebe? Whatever you saw in the premonition, don't tell mom." With that, the young Whitelighter orbed away.

"So, did she eat?" Phoebe asked as she typed away on her laptop.

"Just a bit," Paige answered dejectedly. "If she keeps this up, baby Chris is going to run into plenty of problems."

"I think I'm more worried about big Chris at this point," she muttered.

Paige poured herself a cup of tea and sat down at the kitchen table. "Did you manage to find him?"

"Yeah," Phoebe sighed as she shut her laptop, after writing a whole three sentences during the past hour.

"And?"

"Let's just say he isn't too happy right now."

"You don't say!" Paige exclaimed as she rolled her eyes. "Tell me something I don't know?"

"I had a premonition...and it wasn't pretty."

"What demon is after Wyatt now?" Paige asked.

"I didn't see any demon. I saw a teenage Chris and Piper in this very kitchen. Piper was yelling at Chris and Chris was swearing that it wasn't his fault."

"Oh god," moaned Paige. "I hope that's not what we're heading towards in the near future."

"Chris accused Piper of never believing him and always taking Wyatt's word over his. And then, Ryan came to Chris' defence."

"Who's Ryan?"

Phoebe took a deep breath as she could hardly believe it herself. "Chris' younger brother."

Paige smile excitedly. "You mean we're going to get another nephew?"

"I guess so. He looks so much like Chris too."

Paige took another sip of tea as she let Phoebe's revelations sink in. "So what did Piper say when Ryan spoke up?"

Phoebe shook her head and sighed. "She accused Chris of manipulating Ryan into lying for him."

"What?" Paige exclaimed. "That's weird. Wait, there's more, isn't there?"

"Chris got really upset after that and then Piper yelled back at him, warning him to watch his manners."

"That sounds pretty ugly. For sure I wouldn't want to be in that room if and when this happens."

"There's something that really disturbs me, though," Phoebe finally said. "Assuming that this premonition is true..."

"Premonitions don't lie," Paige informed her sister.

"I know that," Phoebe answered, annoyed at being cut off. "As I was saying...assuming that this premonition is true, it sounds like Piper really favours Wyatt over Chris."

"I don't know. Piper doesn't seem like she would do that...not if both of them were her children," Paige reasoned.

Phoebe nodded in agreement. "That's what I thought too. Something doesn't quite add up but I can't figure out what it is."

"Wow, sounds like you had quite an intense meeting with Chris."

"Tell me about it." A soft sob caught the sisters' attention and they turned to see Piper standing in the doorway.

"I'm going to be a terrible mother," Piper lamented.

"Don't be silly, Piper. You'll be a great mother," Paige said. "Look at how good you are with Wyatt!"

"But I'll be a terrible mother to Chris. He hates me now," Piper cried.

"Piper, you need to calm down," Phoebe said. "And Chris doesn't hate you."

"Of course he does. After everything that has happened, can you blame him?"

"He specifically made me promise not to tell you about the premonition. He didn't want to hurt you, Piper."

"I need to go see him," Piper announced.

"Piper, that's not a good idea right now," Phoebe reasoned, knowing that even if she saw Chris, she wouldn't accomplish much.

"No, I need to see him. He's my son!" Piper quickly put on her jacket and headed out the door.

"Wait, Piper," Paige called out. "Let me orb you over to P3, okay?"

"Piper, go easy on Chris, okay?" Phoebe pleaded. "He really doesn't need a lecture right now."

"Okay, okay," Piper hushed. "I'm here to talk to him, not yell at him."

The three of them walked into the backroom where Chris had been staying since his arrival from the future. Piper knocked on the door but received no answer. She quietly opened the door and the three sisters walked in. A collective gasp could be heard once they saw the state of the room. The small office that served as Chris' home was spotlessly clean and tidy. The only problem was that all of Chris' belongings – clothes, posters, CDs – everything was gone. As she recovered from the shock, Piper noticed an envelope addressed to her that was sitting on the desk.
